II. TOPIC: Marking and Measuring Tools

III. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson the students must be able to:

1. Identify the different kinds of marking and measuring tools.

2. Recognize the difference between marking tools and measuring tools.

Moving on to our lesson we will have

another activity. You have your groups
already.

Our activity is another puzzle again but

this time it is a scrabble word. You need
to puzzled-out the word and present it
to the class. The words are based on the (Teams will start working with their
previous activity. puzzle.)

Group 2 and 5 is our winner. For the
other group don’t worry you did a great

As jess said our topic is all about
marking and measuring tools which we
are using in crafts, especially in the
field of carpentry, masonry and others.
Let’s start with defining the marking
tools.

As the meaning emphasizes marking
tools depends on the kind of work we
are going to perform. There are different
kinds of marking tools. Kindly read the
first one Mariz.

straight lines between two points and

marking and measuring tools.
Jayvee: Marking tools are classified
according to the kind of work they
perform.
Mariz :
1. Chalk line and Reel
 is used for marking a very rough
work
 It is also a tool for marking long,
straight lines or relatively flat
surfaces, much farther than are
practical by hand or with a
straightedge.
Josie:
2. Lead pencil
 With round head is also used for
marking rough work.
 It is used by builders, because
they are suitable for making on
surfaces like concrete or stone.

appropriate than just a normal pencil
like what we are using in writing. Lead
pencil has more legible lines unlike
ordinary pencil. Kindly read the next

Some scribers have a point at both
ends. It is used by dragging the point
over the surface of the work piece to
leave a shallow scratch on its surface.

3. Scratch Awl
 Is used in marking semi-rough
work.
 It is basically a steel spike with
its tip sharpened to a fine point.
The tip of the timber, leaving a
shallow groove. It may also be
used to mark a point by pressing
the tip into the timber.
Jhomer:
4. Scriber
 Is used in marking fine work.
Scriber is made of hard end steel
with a sharp point designed to
mark fine lines.
 The point is sharpened to an
angle of 30 or 40 degrees.
Janice:
5. Compass
 Is a tool used to describe an arc
or circle.
 It is a drafting instrument that
has one pen or pencil point and
one sharp point that is positioned
at the center of the circle to be
described.

Compass is commonly used not only in
carpentry but also in different kinds of
work most specifically in drafting. Leny

distance into equal parts from an arc,
circumference including straight lines.

In all aspects of work measuring tools
are important. Different kinds of work
have different kinds of appropriate
measuring tools. The first one is Two-
Foot Four Folding Rule. Ana please
read.

6. Divider
 It is used for measuring,
transferring or marking off
distance, consisting of two
straight adjustable legs hinged
together and ending in sharp
points.
Ivan:
Measuring tools
 Measuring is anything used to
take a count of quantitative sate
such as weight, length, time or
temperature.
Ana:
1. Two-Foot Four Folding Rule.
 Is made of four folds blade
connected by three hinges spaced
at 6 inches (15 cm.) apart
generally used for measuring
short distance.
 The two-foot folding rule also
serves as a protractor.
Two-Foot Four Folding Rule was easy to
carry in a shirt pocket since it is 6
inches long. It can be used for
measuring both small spaces and
longer distances. They can be
transported easily once they are folded
up, making them useful in working in

2. Extension Rule
 is used to measure inside
distances like doors, windows,
inside cabinets, etc.

3. Zigzag Rule
 is available in 4 feet and 6 feet
long commonly used by
carpenters on rough layout. There
are three types of zigzag rule joint
available:
• Concealed joint
• Riveted Joint
• Spring less Joint

4. Push pull tape Rule
 is used to measure longer
distances available from one
meter to 50 meters long.
 It is used for measuring long,
short, straight lengths

This familiar device is spring- loaded so
that the tape retracts into its metal or
plastic case when not in use. It is also

5. Slide Caliper Rule
 Is a special tool used to measure
outside diameter of cylindrical
objects.

Slide calliper rule is made as a separate
rule or it is incorporated in a folding
rule like the extension on a extension
