    Miriam Defensor Santiago is known in the Philippines as the modern-day Rizal. Miriam
    Defensor Santiago has proven to be an effective, honest, and good public servant
    during her more than two decades in politics in the Philippines, which is why the Filipino
    people admire her. Most Filipinos remember her as the first Filipino to be appointed as a
    judge to the International Criminal Court. I thought she exemplified the characteristics
    and values of a true Filipino. She eagerly demonstrated everything she wanted us to
    see, including the current state of our country, the fight for our rights, and the raising of
    country-related concerns that other politicians are unable to raise. Senator Santiago,
    like Rizal, advocated for the Philippines with intelligence and courage.
