In celebrating Transport Month this October, the Selby Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit
(BRT) is closer to reaching practical completion in one of the heavier industrial nodes
in the inner city of Johannesburg.
The Selby BRT depot will minimise traffic congestion between depots and route
starting points. In addition, do minor and major maintenance for the two Rea Vaya
BRT operating companies, by maintaining in-service buses and out of service buses.

"The Selby BRT depot was undertaken in phases – phase 2A, phase 2B and phase
2C. This is another example of the City's plans geared towards building an effective,
safe, affordable, accessible and reliable transport system," Member of Mayoral
Committee (MMC) for Transport, Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba, said.
The roof structures will allow direct sunlight into the building to reduce the need for
artificial lighting, and water recycling for reuse in the buildings and car washing bays.
Phase 2B of the Selby BRT Depot, now at the final stage, entailed the construction of
the bus depot workshops, refuelling garages, a new refuelling building, a new double-
volume wash bay building, two new refuse buildings and a new gatehouse for security.
The construction activities for Phase 2B began in May 2019. In the facility, the Rea
Vaya operators will be able to maintain their fleet with newly installed specialised
equipment.
The equipment includes brake testing facilities, spray booths, automatic and manual
bus washing facility, and a refuelling facility with AdBlue dispensers.
THE WORKING SPACE IN THE DEPOT
The working space is part of phase 2C, of which the construction of the administration
building is currently underway. This building will be used by Piotrans, for Phase 1A
operating in (Soweto to CBD via Soweto Highway), and soon to be confirmed 1C
operating company, for JHB CBD – Sandton Via Alexandra route.
The amount of work for Phase 2C comprises demolition work in various areas; the
refurbishment of workshop areas; construction of a new canteen, gymnasium, new
offices, administration rooms, boardrooms, storerooms, main foyer with reception
areas, and a newly refurbished courtyard.
"The JDA has been instrumental in providing support to the City residents through
investment in logistics infrastructure; forging connections between the City's various
nodes and in developing effective transport and telecommunications linkages," said
MMC for Development Planning, Cllr Thapelo Amad.
"One of the Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) 2040 outcomes is to provide a
resilient, liveable, sustainable urban environment – underpinned by smart
infrastructure supportive of a low carbon economy. The JDA is currently undertaking
the Selby (BRT), on behalf of the City's Transport Department, which speaks to this
GDS outcome," MMC Thapelo Amad added.
There are several other facilities in the Selby BRT Depot, which was previously used
by Putco Bus Company. Firstly, it will accommodate up to 270 buses in the depot.
The project is playing a role in job creation and skills development by creating
employment opportunities to unskilled and semi-skilledworkers – with 30% of the
contract value awarded to SMME’s in the ward.
In 2013, the JDA, following an instruction from the City’s Transport Department,
developed the first depot in Meadowlands, Soweto.
The Selby BRT depot is environmentally friendly and custom-made for Rea Vaya
buses to service the City of Johannesburg and enhance Rea Vaya phase 1C
operations.
