PROJECT: DEVELOPMENT OF INTEGRATED BUS TERMINAL AT PUMPWELL,
MANGALURU.
PROJECT OVERVIEW

BRIEF DISCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

a) Background & Introduction

Mangalore is the one of the fastest growing Tier II cities in the country and has the privilege
of having all modes of transport such as Road, Rail, Air and Water. The Road transport
system is well developed in the city with the balanced mix of private, intermediate and
public transport vehicles. The Intracity public transport is mainly operated by private bus
service and Intercity (short and long distance), suburban and Interstate transport is operated
by private and government bus services.
However, the absence of an integrated Bus terminal is becoming a major hurdle for the
traffic management of Intracity and Intercity services within the city and is resulting in the
movement of most of the Intracity buses to the temporary Bus terminal developed in
Hampankatta, the CBD of Mangalore. It is also causing Haphazard parking of buses during
non-operational hours.
Hence the District Administration and Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) have identified a
centrally located place for the development of the Integrated Bus Terminal.

b) Aim & Objective

The aim and objective of the proposed project is to provide an integrated Bus Terminal in a
more centrally located place in the city for easy access from all parts of the city and from
outside the city. This Bus Terminal would decongest the city Traffic and also provide
adequate parking facility for busses during non-operating hours.

c) Locational Importance of Site

The project site is located abutting NH66, between Nanthoor junction and Pumpwell circle.
NH75 and NH275 intersect NH66 at Nanthoor junction and Pumpwell circle respectively and
Pumpwell circle and Nanthoor junction are two major gate ways to Mangalore City. The
Mangalore junction railway station is just three kilo meters away from the proposed project
site.
The subject site for the proposed development has an irregular shape with NH-66 (Ernakulam-
Mangalore Highway) which acts as a major access road. The site is effectively open from towards
west with excellent frontage and visibility from the approach road which works in the favour for any
retail and commercial complex. Just opposite is the Vishwas View mixed use building with retail in
the ground floor and is residential in nature for the floors above. Regional head office of Karnataka
bank is located in the proximity to subject site. It is well connected with central, northern and
southern parts of Mangalore by city public transport and arterial roads.
