CAPILLARY BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING RATINGS

1. Introduce yourself to the patient.

2. Verify doctors order for frequency and glucose testing

3. Gather necessary equipment;


 Blood glucose monitor/ Glucometer
 Test strips for blood for glucose monitor
 Non sterile gloves
 Lancets
 Autoclix/ lancet injector
 Cotton balls
 Alcohol wipes
 Sharps biohazard disposal unit

4. Verify patient identity by checking the identification bracelet and


addressing the name.

5. Provide client privacy

6. Perform hand hygiene

7. Explain the procedure to client and inquire about finger


preference and use of lancet injector.

8. Calibrate glucose machine:


 Turn machine on.
 Compare number/ code on machine with number of bottle strips.
 Prepare machine for operation; consult user’s manual for steps
and readiness indicator.
 Validate machine accuracy daily or per laboratory policy with
sample low and high glucose solutions.

9. Remove chemical strip from container and place it in the glucose


testing machine.

10. Load lancet in injector, if used and set trigger.

11. Don gloves

12. Hold chosen finger down and squeeze gently from lower digit to
fingertip, or wrap finger in a warm, wet cloth for 30 seconds or
longer.

13. Wipe puncture site with alcohol pad.

14. Place injector against side of finger (where there are fewer nerve
endings) and release trigger, or stick side of the finger with lancet or
needle using a darting motion.

15. Hold chemical strip under puncture site and squeeze gently until
drop of blood is large enough to drop onto strip and cover indicator
squares. If using arm lancet device. Hold strip close to blood drop
after appropriate amount of blood.

16. If necessary, push timer button on machine as soon as blood has


covered indicator squares or area on test strip. Most machines
automatically begin timing and require no action to start timing once
blood makes contact with strip.

17. Apply pressure on puncture site until bleeding stops (or have client
do so) and place lancet sharps biohazard disposal unit.

18. When timer indicates that appropriate number of seconds has


passed, read the glucose value.

19. Discard soiled materials and gloves in proper container.

20. Record results on glucose flow sheet and administer insulin if


indicated.

21. Position client appropriately with call light within reach.
