Introduction
Cellular Respiration is a metabolic process wherein living cells produce energy
through oxidation of different substances. It is a catabolism because it breaks down the
complex organic muscles to release energy. Cellular respiration takes place in cytosol
of the cell and in the mitochondria.
Glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain are all involved in
cellular respiration. Glycolysis is a catabolic mechanism that partially oxidizes glucose
into two pyruvate molecules in the cytosol (3-C). The Krebs cycle is a catabolic
mechanism found in the mitochondrial matrix that completes glucose oxidation by
converting a pyruvate derivative (Acetyl-CoA) to carbon dioxide. While the electron
transport chain, which is happens in the mitochondrion's inner membrane, absorbs
energized electrons and couples this exergonic flow of electrons to ATP synthesis or
oxidative phosphorylation.
Cells regulate reaction rates in response to changing metabolic demands. When
anabolic pathways' products are plentiful, they are turned off. Feedback inhibition is
the most prevalent control mechanism. Since cells regulate reaction rates in response
to changing metabolic demands, in this experiment we will measure the rate of the
respiration under different circumstances. We will measure the rate of cell respiration
of non-germinated seed and germinated seed under different temperature.
Statement of the Problem
This laboratory experiment aims to know how does germinated seed, worm and
non-germinated seed affect the rate of cell respiration in a certain period of time.
Hypothesis
In this experiment we will test which is more likely to have a higher rate
between germinated, worm and non-germinated seeds in a period of time. The
hypothesis for this experiment is that the germinated peas is more likely to have a
higher rate of cell respiration because it is already thriving and it is involved in many
activities that requires energy compared to a non-germinated seed. Also germinated
peas is higher than worm because worm has no lungs.

Background Research
The germinating seeds will consume more oxygen than the non-germinating
seeds because the germinating seeds are alive and require more oxygen to grow, but
the non-germinating seeds are not nearly as active and will not breathe as much. Other
factors that also effect the rate of the oxygen is the temperature. The higher the
temperature around the respirometers, the faster the rate of oxygen consumption will
be, as the molecules will travel faster and go through respiration more efficiently as a
result of the increased temperature. The action of cellular catalysts termed enzymes is
required for cellular respiration, and all enzymes are known to perform best at specific
temperatures. Worms do not have a respiratory organs which it is cause of a lower rate
or respiration. Because air dissolves in their skin's mucus, they must keep moist in
order to breathe. Worms suffocate if they become too dry.
Experimental Design
The materials that are involved in this experiment is germinated seeds; non-
geminated seeds; worm; glass beads; pipette, used to measure the rate of the cell
respiration; vials; cotton; KOH, which will decrease the volume of gas in the
respirometer; water; thermometer; and tray.
The independent variable would be the germinated seed and the worm since it is
the one that changed and react in this experiment. While the dependent variable would
be the rate of the cellular respiration since it is the one that is being measured.
Additionally, constant variable would be the time, volume, water, temperature, and
especially the amount of KOH these variables are not changed because these are the
factors you keep the same. While the control group is the glass beads because these
are the baseline information of the experiment and no reaction at all.
In this experiment first we need to have same volumes of the germinated seed,
non-germinated seed, and glass beads. After measuring the volumes, put a cotton at the
bottom of the vial and add KOH. After that put another cotton the add the seeds and
glass beads. After this process seal the vial with the pipette then put it in a tray with
water. Put it in the tray in order for the respirometer equilibrate with the water
temperature. After 5 minutes, measure movement of water in the pipette to measure
the rate of the respiration. Also list down the data after 10, and 15 minutes

Results
The experiment was measured in different time and have different variables in
order to have a better analysis since it will be compared to other data. The variables of
this experiment are measured from 0 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes 15 minutes, and
20 minutes.

Based on the results, germinated seed undergo cellular respiration with much
higher rate compared to the non-germinated seeds and worms. The carbon dioxide in
germinated seed ranges from 0.0.57 to 0.35. While 0.041 to 0.162 range for worm
and .001 to .012 range for the non-germinated seed.
Conclusion
According to the results of the experiment, the germinating peas were generally
more active than the worm and non-germinating peas confirming the hypothesis
regarding which would consume oxygen at a faster pace. Therefore, the germinated
seed, and worm reacted at the rate of cell respiration in a certain period of time but
non-germinated seed have little to almost no reaction.
