Grade 8- Science
The Relationship between Faults and Earthquake
1. Participate in decision making on where to build structures based on
knowledge of the location of active faults in the community
2. Make an emergency kit for use at home and in school.

 Using models or illustrations, explain how movements along faults generate

earthquakes
 Differentiate the 1 epicentre of an earthquake from its focus; 2 Intensity of an
earthquake from its magnitude; 3 active and inactive faults
 Explain how earthquake waves provide information about the interior of the
earth.

The particle nature of matter as basis for explaining properties, physical changes,
and structure of substances and mixture
 Present how water behaves in its different states within the water
 Explain the properties of solids, liquids, and gases based on the particle nature
of matter
Lesson 1 - Earthquakes and Faults
This module discusses some important facts about the relationship between faults and
earthquake- its nature and properties. It also discusses the root cause that intertwined the faults and
earthquake.

 Introduction
If you remember, we experienced sequences of earthquake phenomena this month. According to
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) who allocated the tremor of
earthquake with 5.6 magnitude that occurred last October 3, 2021. It was because of tectonic origin,
indicating a movement in the Earth's crust at a depth of 10 kilometres. Due to the Philippines is
located along the Ring of fire. How does this affect us? People who live along the Ring of Fire have
to put up with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
In this module, we will focus on earthquakes. An earthquake is one of the most frightened things
that anyone can ever experience. You grow up believing that the Earth is rock solid and steady. But
then the ground suddenly shakes and you do not know what to believe anymore. No one can stop
quakes from happening. But there are things that people can do to avoid or reduce loss of life and
damage to property. The first step is to have clear understanding of the occurrence of earthquakes.
