To the Citizens of Leyden:
‘As you may know, some years ago a number of e-mails containing poor attempts at
humor were circulated and I received them. Unfortunately, | chose to re-send them to friends
and acquaintances. | did not give them a great deal of thought at that time. Upon reflection, |
realize that | should have been more aware of the impact that these “jokes” have on the targets
of this type of “humor”. | understand now that my actions were inappropriate.
I want you all to know that I have listened and learned from this experience. | apologize
to you for my actions and for any pain the content of these e-mails may have caused. | want,
you to understand that | value my role as your Chief of Police and will continue to strive to
serve and protect everyone to the best of my ability,

1, Disciplinary action letter to go into Dan’s personnel file stating that he forwarded emails
that had content that was explicitly racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, and anti-Muslimn,
Any further action like this, no matter how small, will be grounds for immediate
termination with cause.
2. Formal apology letter from Dan to the town stating what was done wrong and how he
feels about his actions (after his counsel has reviewed)
Dan submits retirement letter by Dec 31, 2021, stating that he will retire from the Leyden
Police Force and step down as Chief on or before June 11, 2022, with no chance for
reappointment in the future.
4, Letter to Paul Mark rescinding the Sclect Board support of any further re-appointment as
Chief past June 11, 2021. (Michele submitted last week and received an
acknowledgement email)
5, Dan cannot be a member of the new ad hoc committee (steering committee for future of
police department)
6, Training/retraining for all police officers including Dan and Gilda on racial bias
