What is a position paper?
• A position paper presents the
writer’s stand or viewpoint on a
particular issue. Writing a position
paper entails outlining arguments
and proposing the course of
action, by doing so, you are already
taking part in a larger debate.
• It has the power to change the
opinions of others.
• It is an essential tool in bringing
about societal change.
Basic Features of a Position paper
• The issue should be debatable.
• The issue should be current and
relevant.
• In-depth research on the issue.
• Analyze various positions objectively.
• Cite valid and reliable sources.
• Arrange evidences logically.

INTRODUCTION
• Present the issue by grabbing
readers’ attention
• Define the issue and discuss the
background
• Provide general statement via
thesis statement
BODY
• State your main arguments
• Provide sufficient evidences
• Provide counterarguments
against possible weaknesses of
your aruguments
CONCLUSION
• Restate your position and main
arguments
• Suggest course of action
• Make your position paper superior
and acceptable
• End with a powerful closing
statement such as; quotation, a
challenge, or a question
