ACTIVITY
PACK
Getting a Job 13
Tailor Your
Resume
This pack contains an activity to help you apply what you have learned in the ‘Tailor
Your Resume’ module.
In the activity you will find a 5-step guide to help you tailor your resume effectively. You
will also find a checklist to make sure you’ve completed each step.
• Tailor you resume for each job you apply for: your
resume should be specific to each job you apply for
REMEMBER
Go through your resume picking out the experiences and skills that match
what the employer is looking for. Tailor the experiences and skills so that
they show the employer that you have what they want.
3. REMOVE UNNECESSARY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES
Before thinking about what to remove, take a break – it helps to look at your
resume again with fresh eyes. Once you’ve taken a break, go back and see if
there’s anything you can cut out. Remember, you want your tailored resume
to be punchy and to the point – you may only have 60 seconds or less to
impress.
4. REVIEW YOUR TAILORED RESUME
Have you managed to cover all the skills asked for by the employer? If you
haven’t included all the required skills and are unsure of how to handle this
you can:
o Highlight that you are showing initiative to get the skills they are looking
for. For example, attend online training courses or sign up for volunteering
activities that will help you develop the skills.
o Try to show an understanding of the missing skills. Show the employer
you understand the importance of the skill in the job and your willingness
to develop it. This is better than not mentioning that skill at all.
CHECKLIST
As you are tailoring your resume, refer to this checklist to make sure you have
considered each of the 5-steps.
Include buzzwords in your tailored resume as these will help to strengthen
your claims. A list of resume buzzwords can be found online and in the
Activity Pack for the ‘Create Your Resume’ Module. Beware, using too many
buzzwords without context is pointless. Make sure you use words employers
want to see and that apply to you.
Some job descriptions list which skills are essential and which are desirable.
If this is the case, focus on ensuring you can demonstrate as many of the
essential skills as possible before focusing on the desirable skills.
Keep your tailored resume to 2 pages or less - employers don’t want to read
multiple pages.
Copy any new experiences or skills that you write in your tailored resume into
your general resume. That way, you will have those skills to use in future
applications.
Before sending your tailored resume check that it is easy to read and all
related information is laid out. Don’t forget to do a spell check! Use the
checking tips that were given in the ‘Create Your Resume’ module.
Make sure you keep a copy of each tailored resume you create. That way, you
will be able to easily refer to your resume before your interview.
