Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your
immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to
consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country.

I always sought to educate myself in the best way among the available options in Iraq. I graduated from the

second–highest university in Iraq in its time, the University of Mustansiriyah, and I was the fifth among the top
ten graduates and the top ten in the school back in 2007. After graduation,  I sought more educate myself by

engaging in highly competitive local and online courses. I am currently enrolled in a Professional Development
Course for English Language Teachers; the course is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and taught by
international English language specialists in World Learning Foundation.

The UK universities continuously maintain the highest rankings among the international universities as they have

a global reputation for teaching and research, as well as they have the elite of the well–known academics. It is
no wonder that the students in the UK are taught by academics who authored books that students studied
during their undergraduate study in their home countries. My role model is Professor Peter J. Roach has studied

and taught in the UK, as well as many global leaders and influencers. I recall the President of Costa Rica, Carlos
Alvardo, studied in the UK besides many others. The environment of the UK and its universities being multi–
cultural and diverse, is the most important factor for international students when they choose the country to
pursue their postgraduate studies in a friendly, open, culturally diverse, and charming–nature country.

believe that my academic background and my experience that I gained after graduation have helped me to shape

 in
my academic future and choose the following courses. Many universities in the UK offer a Master’s degree

Linguistics, but not all have what is required to develop my potentials. I specifically selected the courses in the

Queen Mary University in London, University of York and the University of Lancaster because their courses
contain the essential modules that I need to develop my potential as a Sociolinguist. Some principal modules are
Sociolinguistics; this one helps me to understand the effect of all aspects of society on the way language is

used,

and society’s effect on language besides other modules such as Sociophonetics, and language change and
variation. Sociolinguistics is going to be the axle of my thesis in the UK. The presence of these modules in these
three selected universities will be of huge assistance to me personally; as they will promote my knowledge in

this field, and to my country; as I am going to use these subjects, modules and research experience that I will
gain to benefit the minorities in my country. I am certain that I can pursue my studies successfully at any of the
chosen universities. They are all geared towards my academic and professional development to best apply my
future career plans.
