CLASS VIII

PART 4
Recapitulation

There are 2n non-square numbers between the squares of 2 consecutive

numbers n and n+1

The sum of first n odd natural numbers is

If a natural number cannot be expressed as a sum of successive odd

natural numbers starting from 1, then it is not a perfect square.

Square of any odd number greater than 1 can be expressed as the sum of
two consecutive natural numbers.

Square of any natural number ending with unit digit 5 can be found using
Pythagorean Triplets
Pythagorean Triplets

Now, consider any Pythagorean triplet

For example, lets take (3,4,5) Now, 3 = 22 – 1
4 = 2(2)
And 5 = 22 + 1
Another Pythagorean triplet (6,8,10): 8 = 32 – 1
6 = 2(3)
And 10 = 32 + 1
Example 7
Example 8

All Pythagorean triplets may not be found using this method.

For example : (5,12,13) is one such triplet not found using this method.
Exercise 3.2

(i) We can find any Pythagorean triplet by using (2m, m2 -1 , m2 +1)

Lets assume 6 = m2 -1 value of m is not a natural number

Lets assume 6 = m2 +1 value of m is not a natural number

Lets assume 6 = 2m, hence m = 3

m2 -1 = 8
m2 +1 = 10

Hence, the required Pythagorean triplet is (6,8,10)

Exercise 3.2

(iii) We can find any Pythagorean triplet by using (2m, m2 -1 , m2 +1)

Lets assume 63 = 2m value of m is not a natural number

Lets assume 63 = m2 +1 value of m is not a natural number

Lets assume 63 = m2 -1, hence m = 8

2m = 16
m2 +1 = 65

Hence, the required Pythagorean triplet is (16,63,65)

Square Roots

Just as the inverse of addition is subtraction, and of multiplication is division,

the inverse operation of squaring a number is finding a square root.

There are 2 integral square roots of a perfect square number. The

radical sign indicates the non-negative square root of the radicand.
In , 81 is the radicand.
