Methodology
Analytical Research: used facts or information already available and analysed
these to make a critical evaluation of the character.
I will be reading the respective books thoroughly and analyse the characters. The data
collected will be compiled into small content and then will be presented to the reader with
the help of pictures for a much better experience.
1.Grandma
The Portrait of a lady – Kushwant Singh

The portrait of a Lady is part of an autobiography by Khushwant Singh. In this story,

the author tries to create a portrait of a grandmother. The grandmother lives
together with his grandson and was a great companion for him. The author always
saw an old grandmother who always had the same appearance. She was short, fat
and slightly bent. Her face was a criss-cross of wrinkles. Her silvery white hair was
scattered over her wrinkled face.
When the author was a child, the grandmother used to accompany him to the
school. She even taught him things. But once they moved to the city, the author was
enrolled in an English medium school and author went there in school bus, the
bonding between the grandson and grandma began to break. She didn’t believe in
the things that they taught in English medium school. She believes that music is not
something to be taught at school and that it was not for innocent people. She used
to feed sparrows in the afternoon and that was her best hour of the day. Then the
author decides to go abroad for studies. He then came back after 5 years. The author
had feared that grandma will pass away before he is back. But fortunately grandma
was still alive. When the author returned she was extremely happy and collected the
women in the neighbourhood, got a drum and started to sing songs of the
homecoming of warriors. She fell ill the next morning. She assumed that her death
was approaching. And as she had predicted she passed away. When she died, the
sparrows had come to visit her and silently went off without making any sound.
2. Uncle Khosrove
The summer of the beautiful white horse – William Saroyan

The story ‘The summer of the beautiful white horse’ is about two young
Armenian boys Aaram and Mourad of the Gharoglanian family who were
known for their honesty. The story revolves around their attempts to hide a
horse from the public. Khosrove was the Uncle of Maurad and Aaram disputes
that Mourad has inherited the qualities of Khosrov. Khosrov was a big man
with a loud voice. Even when his son came running to him to inform him that
his house was on fire he replied angrily “It’s no harm, pay no attention to it”
When John Byro came to their house to tell about his grief on losing the horse,
Uncle Khosrov entered the scene and repeated his dialogue “ It’s no harm, pay
no attention to it”
