OFFICE OF EDUCATION Alvino B. Fantini
Much has happened since then. Although The Experiment has been in
existence more than 30 years, it has probably made some of its most significant
strides in the last few years because of the addition of language courses.
Dr. Donald B. Watt, The Experiment's Founder, realizing this remarked..."When
I heard about the new plan I said to myself this should be the greatest
improvement in the Experiment method since the homestay was discovered...I see
this as a turning point in The Experiment". Indeed it was. Pre-departure
language training has placed The Experiment ahead of other international
educational programs in the preparation of its members for their experiences
abroad. Language training insures that participants possess at least a
minimum ability to converse in the language of their host country. To date
The Experiment has taught more than 30 languages to more than 7,000 students,
and its orientation and training center, the School for International Training,
has been recognized as an important language school in the United States.
The development of EIL language texts is one of the more recent efforts
of The Experiment to improve the quality of instruction. Iopefully these
texts serve not only for Experimenters but also as a genuine contribution
to the field of language teaching. Experiment materials, although prepared
primarily for the Experimenter, also serve the individual who plans to go
abroad for work, study or travel. The vocabulary and content are removed
from the traditional classroom-teacher-blackboard syndrome so that the
situations reflect an experience abroad --travel, meeting people, eating
strange foods, visiting places of interest, shopping, etc. The learner is
placed in situations to which he can relate his own expectations and with
which he can identify.

THE SPANISH LANGUAGE
The language within Spain itself, with an area only about four
times that of New York State, is not nearly so uniform as that of the
United States. Besides Spanish (or Castilian as it is also called),
Basque (vasco), Galician (gallego), and Catalan (catal6n) are also
spoken in different regions. These vary from one another as do German,
French and English. Basque is spoken primarily in the northeastern
section of Spain along the Pyrenees. Galician is spoken in north-
western Spain and is a mixture of Portuguese, Spanish and Dasque.
Catalan is spoken by about three million people in the province of
Catalonia; this dialect Is a mixture of French, Italian, Basque and
Spanish. Yet Castilian remains the officially recognized language of
the country.
The latter part of the 15th century was a significant era in the
development of the Spanish tongue. In 1474, Fernando de Aragon and
Isabel de Castilla. married thereby uniting Spain. Fernando became
"castilianizedu and accepted the speech of Castile making it the official
tongue of the country. In 1492, the Moors were defeated in Granada
and the influence of the Arabs was finally eliminated after affecting
the Spanish tongue for over 700 years. Lastly, Columbus arrived in the
New World and brought with him the Castilian language which was soon to
spread throughout most of the hemisphere.
iii
Although there are significant differences in the pronunciation
and lexicon of each of the Spanish speaking countries, Spanish generally
follows the same grammatical rules in all of the countries where it
is spoken. The institution which is entrusted with the responsibility
of insuring that grammatical standards are maintained throughout the
Spanish speaking world is the "Real Academia de la Lengua Espanola."
Nonetheless regional differences exist not only from country to country,
but a)so within the regions of an individual country. One generally
defines three major areas of speech within Latin America: areas
bordering on the Caribbean, the mountainous areas of the Andean chain,
and the south (Argentina and Uruguay particularly). Although these
areas can be continually subdivided. Fortunately regional differences
are never too serious so as to interfere with communication. Students
are advised to-follow the pronunciation appropriate for the region they
plan to visit.

go y muchas leo;ulabres.
