Student Teacher’s Name: Whitney Robinson

Subject/Topic/Unit: Math/Algebraic Expressions
Grade Level: 6th/7th
Date: 9/28/2021

1. Indicator number and description of MS Common Core/MS-CCRS

a. MS-CCRS 6.EE.1, MS-CCRS 6.EE.2
2. Specific Objectives
a. MS-CCRS 6.EE.1 – Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-
number exponents.
b. MS-CCRS 6.EE.2 – Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand
for numbers. .
Regular Objective – 1. Use exponents to make sense of quantitative relationships./2.
Understand the process of order of operations.
Enrichment Objective – 1. Evaluate expressions that consist of whole numbers, exponents,
fractions, and decimals./2. Substitute in a value for the given variable and complete the
calculations.
Remedial Objective – 1. Read and identify the parts of a numerical and algebraic expression
using mathematical terms./ Understand that a variable is a symbol that stands in the place of an
unknown value.

3. Lesson Procedures
Remediation activities can be student accommodations
a. Introduction/Motivation
i. Statement of Learning
1. Today we will be doing a review on the process of solving an
algebraic expression. We will go review exponents, order of
operations (PEMDAS), variables, and expressions.
ii. Purpose
1. Can you think of a reason why it is important to use
numerical/algebraic expressions OR an instance where using
these two types of expressions would be helpful?
iii. Link to Prior Knowledge
1. The current lesson will be a build on to their prior knowledge of
multiplication, subtraction, division, addition, etc.
iv. Behavior Expectations
1. Be attentive and respectful at all times.
2. Raise your hand to be recognized.
3. Keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
4. Keep masks on at all times.
5. No talking during instructional time or while others are speaking.
6. If you do not understand, raise your hand for help.
b. Demonstration (I Do)
i. The teacher will thoroughly explain the process for each section covered.
After the teacher explains how to solve a certain process, the teacher will
then do an example or two. After doing the example, the teacher will
explain the steps involved that led to the answer she received.
c. Guided Practice
i. The teacher and students will do two to three practice problems together.
The teacher will ask guided questions and lead the discussion step by
step of how the students obtained their answers/how they solved the
problem.
d. Independent Practice
i. The teacher will give the students two to three practice problems of their
own to complete independently. After independent practice is complete,
the class will discuss their findings.
e. Culmination/review
i. The teacher will ask if everyone is finished with the independent work.
After review of answers, teacher will pass out homework assignment and
teacher will then ask each student which part of the lesson was their
favorite and why.
f. Follow-up with an assessment of the
Regular Objective directions
- Teacher will tell students that she would like to know if they
can use exponents to make sense of quantitative
relationships and substitute in values for a given variable
and complete the given calculation.
- The teacher will inform the students that they will be taking
a quiz.
- The teacher will give each student a quiz consisting of 25
questions on the material covered in class.
- The teacher will inform students to complete the quiz.
- The teacher will use a scoring guide/answer key to grade
the quizzes.
Enrichment Objective directions
- Teacher will tell the students that she would like to know if
they are able to evaluate expressions that consist of whole
numbers, exponents, fractions, and decimals and
substitute in a value for the given variable and complete
the calculations.
- The teacher will inform the students that they will be taking
a quiz.
- The teacher will give each student a quiz consisting of 25
questions on the material covered in class.
- The teacher will inform students to complete the quiz.
- The teacher will use a scoring guide/answer key to grade
the quizzes.
Remedial Objective directions
- Teacher will tell students that she would like to know if they
are able to read and identify the parts of a numerical and
algebraic expression using mathematical terms and if they
are able to understand that a variable is a symbol that
stands in the place of an unknown value.
- The teacher will inform the students that they will be taking
a quiz.
- The teacher will give each student a quiz consisting of 25
questions on the material covered in class.
- The teacher will inform students to complete the quiz.
- The teacher will use a scoring guide/answer key to grade
the quizzes.

4. Evaluation (formative and summative assessment)

Introduction
The teacher will be able to evaluate the student’s ability and understand of the
subject introduced by closely monitoring the students’ answers to the questions being
asked.

Demonstration
The instructor will be able to evaluate the students’ ability and
understanding of the subject introduced by closely monitoring the students while
she is demonstrating how to work the expressions on the iPad/Smartboard
reminding the students to listen and watch closely.

Guided practice
The instructor will be able to evaluate the student’s ability and understanding of
the subject introduced by closely monitoring the students while the teacher
guides the class and uses cues to help the students answer the questions.

Independent practice
The teacher will monitor the students’ ability to write and evaluate numerical
expressions involving whole-number exponents, and their ability to write, read,
and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers. .

Assessment
The teacher will use a scoring guide to score the assessment.
The teacher will share the results with the students.
The teacher will record the grades in her gradebook.
The teacher will also record the students’ progress in their individual folders.
The students will take the folders home for parent review, and a parent signature
is required upon return.
The teacher will revisit/reteach lesson individually to students who do not meet
criteria.
