Responsible Backpacker
Mary Grace S. Ybaňez

Shan and Zhoey talk about Shan’s first lone trip to his mom’s hometown in
Davao City.

Zhoey: How was your trip?

Shan: It was awesome! It made me witness the beauty of Davao City on a budget-
friendly tour. I tried staying in a low-cost dormitel and ate sumptuous but
inexpensive street foods in Roxas Avenue Night Market.

Zhoey: How long did you stay there?

Shan : I stayed there for a week.

Zhoey: Was it your first time to visit your

mom’s hometown?

Shan: Yeah! It was my first time to visit

my mom’s birthplace.

Zhoey: I see. Did you go sightseeing?

Shan: Yes. I could say that I’m a certified

backpacker now. I brought all my
possessions with me on my
backpack as I went to its popular
tourist spots. The place was
famous for its natural
attractions, many of which were
easily reached from the city
center. Within an hour’s travel
from the airport, you can
already enjoy the pristine white
sand beaches of Samal Island or
visit the highland nature at Eden Nature Park. It offered homey
accommodations, various restaurants that used ingredients food
freshly harvested from gardens in the area, fun outdoor activities,
hiking trails, and a cultural village.

Zhoey: That’s interesting! I’ve heard the town is known for durian fruit, did you try
it?

Shan: As one of the locals said, “You won’t be able to complete your trip without a
taste of our iconic Durian fruit.” Indeed, it tasted heavenly!

Zhoey: Were the people friendly?

Shan: Yes, they were very kind to me. I oftentimes asked the locals for directions,
and they were willing to help. Also, the town promotes green travel. It
demonstrates a deep commitment to eco-friendly policies and
practices. When I asked for a trash bin at People’s Park, the local pointed
to three bins and written above “Compliance to Section 16 of the
Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of
2000”. With that, I made sure all my rubbish was on me in that weeklong
stay.

Zhoey: Great! What is your next destination?

Shan: I want to go to my dad’s hometown next to Cebu City.

Zhoey: I hope I’ll be a responsible backpacker like you who supports green travels!

COMPREHENSION CHECK:
1. Where did Shan go?
a. City of Cebu
b. City of Davao
c. City of Manila

2. What values are present in the dialogue practice?

a. justice and fairness
b. hardwork and industry
c. obedience and compassion

3. What is the function/purpose of the highlighted statements in the dialogue?

a. To convince others to be one with nature
b. To inform others to Davao City’s tourist attractions
c. All of the above

4. How do these purposes/functions of oral communication help in

communicating messages?

___________________________________________________________________________

Were you able to identify the purpose/function of communication in the

dialogue practice? Did you answer the comprehension check correctly? Check your
answers using the key to corrections.

What is It

The highlighted statements in the dialogue that you have just read are examples
of purposes/functions of communication.
FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION

There are five functions of communication. These are regulation/control, social

interaction, motivation, emotional expression, and information dissemination.
1. Regulation or Control – Communication enables the control or regulation of
behavior in many ways.

For example:
Doctor Prescription: Take your medicine three (3) times a day.
Home Regulation:Wash the dishes now, I won’t allow you to go
to the party later.
2. Social Interaction – Communication fosters social interaction. It allows
individuals to interact with people in almost all aspects of our life and every
communication situation.

For example:
Marriage Proposal: Will you marry me?
Invitation: Would you like some coffee, tea, or milk?

3. Motivation – Communication motivates or encourages people to live better.

For example:
The manager’s award points to each subordinate as a reward.
The subordinate can save the points and cash them in for prizes, free
lunches, or even a day off from work.

4. Emotional Expression – Communication facilitates people’s expression of

their feeling, satisfaction, frustrations, and needs.

For example:
Appreciation: I am so glad that you came into my life.
Express ambition: I want to finish up my studies with
good grades to be accepted in a good university.
Express a need: I need you in my life.
Express prayers:“We pray for those who suffered a broken
heart from their crush.”

5. Information Dissemination - Communication functions to convey

information.
For example:
Gathering information: Where can I get my license?
Sharing information: You can find the bathroom next to that
door.

EXAMINING SPEAKER’S PURPOSE

1. To inform – It is evident in lectures where the speaker presents factual

information. This purpose can be used to communicate routine, repetitive,
daily tasks, instructions, codes, steps, and procedures in the workplace. It is
also commonplace in ordinary conversations.
For example:
The president delivers the State of the Nation Address,
enumerating the accomplishment of the President’s Office.

2. To persuade – It occurs when a person attempts to convince an individual

or group to take certain specific actions. In other words, the speakers of this
type of speech want their audience to think and feel the way they want them
to.

For example:

A politician wants to get the voice of his or her target

constituents. He or she should present his or her speech that the
audience would see the merit of choosing him or her. He or she may
highlight educational attainment, performance record, or appeal to the
audience’s emotion: he or she may trace her family background being
one with the masses.
3. To entertain – It is aimed at lightening the mood of the audience. It needs
timing and proper delivery of the entertaining piece. Establishing a good
rapport with your audience is a must to achieve your purpose of entertaining
your audience.

For example:
Speech made by stand-up comedians or short segments used as
adlibs for long informative or persuasive speech.

Activity 3. Digital Evidence

Examine how the following texts are used as “evidence” to show each
function of communication. Solve the crime by writing inside the box the correct
function it serves.

Activity 4. Identify Speaker’s Purpose
DIRECTIONS: Read the following speech excerpts and identify the purpose of the
speakers. You may surf the internet to get the copy of the complete text.

SPEECH EXCERPTS SPEAKER’S PURPOSE

a. Speech of President Benigno Aquino

I understand I am only human, and thus, I am imperfect. I
ran for the Presidency despite my discomfort with the
trappings of power, because if I passed up on this
opportunity to effect real change, I would not have been able
to live with myself, especially if the situation worsened. But
in this effort, the participation of all is necessary. Everything
I have said has not been to criticize, but to speak the truth,
for the truth shall set us all free. If we are able to settle our
differences, can we not benefit our people quicker?

aquino-general-audience-pope-francis/
b. Speech of Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago

It is very important that you should choose the person you

will marry and stay with that person. There are many
people now who believe in serial love, loving one person
after another. I don’t think that is good for our mental
health. I think we should get it over with. Love is like
measles, you know. You only get it once in your lifetime and
you are immune forever. I am very happy to say that is
what happened to me. I am completely immune to any
temptation. All men who have passed my life after I got
married might as well have been sticks of furniture .

people/10150102847753017

c. Speech of Sen. Manny Pacquiao

And the most important thing is not to us, to me, or -- the
most important thing is the name of the Lord that the name
of the Lord will be glorified. And I want to know that there
is God. I want -- This is -- This is what I want to know the
people that, you know, I want to let the people know that
there is God who can raise someone from nothing into
something. And that’s me. That’s me. I came from nothing
into something, and that’s -- I owe everything to God. He
gave me this blessing so it’s all credit to the Lord.
