Course Objective:
The students will understand their curriculum subject(s) which include the principles of Electrical
Engineering and Electronics. Apply the skills learned in preparing their models and projects
whenever such a need arises, including awareness about power and energy safety of the personnel,
devices and equipment, and limitation on performance.

Basics of Electrical Parameters:
Introduction of Electrical Current, Voltage, Power and Energy; Sources of
Electrical Energy-Independent and Dependent Source, Source conversion;

Electrostatics and Capacitors:
Electric charge and Laws of electrostatics; Definitions-Electric field, lines of

Capacitor; Capacitor in series and parallel, Energy stored in a capacitor, Types
of capacitors and their applications, Charging and discharging of capacitor.
Electric and Magnetic Circuits:
Faraday's Laws; Lenz's Law; Fleming's Rules; Effect of magnetic field on
current carrying conductor; Magnetic circuits; Types of magnets, Statically

and dynamically induced EMF; Concepts of self inductance, mutual
inductance and coefficient of coupling; Inductance in series and parallel;
Hysteresis and Eddy current losses; Energy stored in magnetic fields.
Semiconductor Devices:
Energy bands in solids, Types of materials (insulator, semiconductor,
conductor), intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, p-n junction, junction diode
and V-I characteristics, types of junction diodes. Diode as rectifier half wave
and full wave rectifier (centre taped). Transistor; description and three
terminals, Zener diode voltage regulators: Regulator circuit with no load,
Loaded Regulator. Numerical examples as applicable. Types- pnp and npn

BJT operation, BJT Voltages and Currents, BJT amplification, Common Base,
Common Emitter and Common Collector Characteristics, Numerical examples
as applicable, Photocells, Solar cells; working principle and engineering
applications. FET and their applications, single stage transistor amplifier,
push-pull amplifier, voltage, current and power amplifiers, efficiency,
bandwidth, input and output impedance, mono-stable, a stable and bistable
transistor ckts, zero-crossing detector. Introduction of Op-Amp.

Necessity and Advantages of three phase systems, Generation of three phase

General construction and principle of different types of transformers; Emf

S1: CircuitLab
CircuitLab provides online, in-browser tools for schematic capture and circuit simulation. These tools allow
students and professional engineers to design and analyze analog and digital systems before ever building a
prototype. Online circuit simulation allows for quick design iteration and accelerated learning about
electronics.
S2: PSIM
PSIM is an Electronic circuit simulation software package, designed specifically for use in power electronics
and motor drive simulations but can be used to simulate any electronic circuit.
S3: MATLAB
MATLAB is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and proprietary programming language
developed by MathWorks. MATLAB allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data,
implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other
languages.
S4: Multisim
Multisim is industry standard SPICE simulation and circuit design software for analog, digital, and power
electronics in education and research. Multisim integrates industry standard SPICE simulation with an
interactive schematic environment to instantly visualize and analyze electronic circuit behavior.
