BATHING A NEWBORN

“Good afternoon ma’am. I am _______, your nurse. For this day, ma’am, I’ll be giving bath to your baby. You could
join me so you could see the procedure.”

1. Check the room temperature.

2. Check the baby’s temperature.

3. Hand hygiene

4. Prepare the needed equipment:

- Basin of warm water - Baby soap, shampoo - Baby’s clothes


- Baby dry towel - Diaper - Baby Blanket/ linen

5. Arrange the baby’s clothes and diaper.

6. Test the water for appropriate temperature with your elbow.

7. Undress the baby while supporting the head and neck or lay the baby on a
changing mat.

8. Hold the baby in football position.

9. Fold the ears while supporting the head and neck.

10. Cleanse the baby’s eyes with cotton balls/clean small towel soaked with
warm water from inner canthus to outer canthus. Rinse.

11. Wash face with the rinsed towel, from the forehead down to the chin,
forming letter S, two times. Next is the ears, from inner to outer.

12. For the head, support the baby’s head and neck and cover the baby’s ears
with your fingers. Wet the hair, shampoo, and rinse well.

13. Undress the baby and put him in the basin, supporting properly the head
and shoulder.

14. Apply soap all over the body, giving particular attention to the skin folds,
rinse thoroughly from head to toes.

15. Turn the baby on the back while supporting his/her face. Cleanse the back
and perineal area with soap and water.

16. Dry the baby carefully with the towel from head to toes. Put on a clean
nappy.

17. Dress the baby correctly with support. Mummify with blanket or linen.
