It had been a long day at school for Pascualino. He was very tired.

He had
taken two exams earlier that morning and now was about to start his last
hour of classes before going home.

Pascualino saw a nightingale perched on the tree branch outside of the

classroom window. He watched it and listened to it sing.

Pascualino then leaned over his desk and put his head on his folded arms.
The minutes passed until he was no longer aware of anything and he
slipped into a deep sleep.

"Pascualino! Pascualino!" said his Social Study´s professor.

"How long have you been asleep? Can you tell me what was the last thing
I said?" the teacher asked him.

"What? Sorry. What were you saying?" Pascualino asked, disoriented.

"What is the topic of class today?" the teacher insisted.

"Well," Pascualino began to scan the board looking for a clue, but he could
only see the word RESPONSIBILITY written in capital letters in the center.

"Responsibility?" he answered with an unsure half smile.

"Do you really think that's the topic for today?" his teacher said with an
accusing look.

"Yes?" he said with a laugh, as his nerves were failing him.

It was an uncomfortable situation for Pascualino.

"Pascualino, I should send you to the principal's office. Not only have you
fallen asleep in class, but you also laughed in my face," said the teacher
seriously.

"Sir! No, please," said Pascualino "This is not how it happened," the boy
tried to explain while standing up.

"And now you are getting up without my permission?" the teacher pointed
out much more seriously. "This clearly is a lack of respect and rebellion on
your part."
"But..."

Pascualino tried to defend himself, but he kept silent and sat down again,
lowering his head.

"This really is bad," thought Pascualino, trying to find a solution to such a

horrible situation.

The classroom fell into an uncomfortable silence, and a few minutes

passed and nobody said anything.

"Pascualino," the teacher called to him. "Our topic for today's class is:
Compliance with the law," he said.

"I'm really sorry, it wasn't my intention to fall asleep but," the young man
took the opportunity to apologize but the teacher stopped him.

"Save your excuses. Tomorrow you must make a presentation to your

classmates about today's lesson," the teacher ordered him.

"Sir, if that's the topic, why on the board does it say the word
RESPONSIBILITY?" reasoned Pascualino. "Do they have any relationship?"

"That is your task, not mine," concluded the serious teacher.

"That's all for today. I'll see you tomorrow for Mr. Bravo's keynote
presentation."

“And one more thing: no one is allowed to tell Pascualino what today's
class was about.”

"Wow, that was strong!" William told Pascualino when class had ended.

"Don't remind me! I can't stop thinking about that uncomfortable moment.
And I don't even want to imagine what Mr. Ortiz will say to the principal,"
Pascualino confessed to his best friend.

"Better stop thinking about “what ifs” and prepare an excellent

presentation for tomorrow,” William advised him.
"Yes, you are right, but I think Mr. Ortiz was furious today. You know, in
general, he usually is very calm and understanding. So I was really taken
back when I saw his reaction and behavior," confessed Pacualino.

"Right! But you know, we all have our bad days," answered Will.

"Yes. Wish me good luck," said Pascualino when he got home.

"Good luck! See you tomorrow," said Will.

Pascualino arrived home, rested a bit, and after a light snack he began to
study for his presentation.

Time flew by as he researched and prepared his assignment. When his

parents arrived home from work, Pascualino decided to ask them for some
help.

"I think watching the news tonight could help you. In recent months there
have been many confrontations between law enforcement officers and
citizens," said Pascualino’s father, while turning on the television.

"Your father is right. In addition, compliance with the law must be

objective. The law exists to ensure freedom and liberty for everyone. If
people are subjective and emotional with respect to the law, it can lead to
situations like those that have made headlines over the past few days,"
mentioned Pascualino's mother.

Pascualino began to take careful notes of all the information his parents
gave him, as well as the different examples that were shown on the news.

After spending another two hours exchanging opinions and researching a

little more, Pascualino felt fully prepared for his presentation and finally
understood the relationship between the word responsibility and
compliance with the law.

The next day he got up early, had a good breakfast, and got ready for
school.

"Ready?" William said when he saw him.

"Yes! My parents helped me a lot last night," Pascualino confessed with a
big smile on his face.

Upon arriving at school, Pascualino and William went to take a seat in

their places and waited for Mr. Ortiz to start Class.

"Are you ready, Pascualino?" Mr. Ortiz asked him.

"Yes sir," Pascualino said as he walked to the front of the class to begin his
presentation.

"Hello everyone. Today we will talk about compliance with the law and what it
means to be responsible," began Pascualino.

"In general, the concept of compliance means adjusting to a norm, policy, rule or
law. As a society we should comply with the laws so that we all can enjoy the same
rights and to guarantee a healthy coexistence based on equality and respect, "
explained Pascualino.

"In this way, law enforcement agencies are established to monitor and support the
rights of everyone in the society and to ensure that all act in a socially responsible
manner. "

Mr. Ortiz nodded with a slight smile and Pascualino continued with his speech.

"But unfortunately, in our country, there have been cases where the authorities
abuse their power and fail to fulfil their duty and responsibility to all citizens."

The boy paused for a breath and continued, “And not only do law enforcement
officials abuse their power at times, but we as citizens do not follow the law nor
respect it. That is why we have so much inequality. By not complying with the law,
we are not all equal: there is abuse, privilege, inequity, deprivation of rights, etc."
explained Pascualino.

"The idea is to understand what it means to be responsible. It is not always the case
to just blame the authorities, when in the end each one of us makes up a society. It
is up to each one of us to be honest and respectful. It's a personal decision," he
concluded.

"And for that, I want to accept my responsibility publicly and apologize for
what happened yesterday. Mr. Ortiz, my intention was never to disrespect
you," said Pascualino, looking directly at his teacher.

"I know, Pascualino," he said with a sympathetic smile.

"My attitude yesterday was not correct either. I reacted the way I did to
prove a point. Laws create a forum for authorities and citizens to interact,
or in our case, students and teachers," said the teacher with a smile.

"I understand the reason why you fell asleep yesterday. It was not because
of rebellion or disinterest in class, but because you stayed up studying late
since this is exam week, isn't it?" Mr. Ortiz inquired and Pascualino
nodded.

"My responsibility as an authority is to act appropriately and ethically, not

being carried away by my personal interests and emotions, but by mutual
respect and understanding."

"Now I understand Mr. Ortiz. All this was intended to teach us the
relationship between compliance with the law and responsibility," said
Pascaulino with a smile.

"Exactly. My decision to get angry with you and not understand showed
an abuse of my power over my students. It is not the proper way for an
official with power and authority over another to act.”

Pascualino breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that he successfully fulfilled

the presentation and that his teacher was not angry with him, but had
used the situation to teach them an extremely important lesson.

"Responsibility to act must be shared by everyone in society, because each

person plays an important part in building a more just society together.
Blaming others is not the solution. The solution is to be responsible and
upright with our actions and decisions."

"It was an excellent lesson. Thank you Mr. Ortiz," Pascualino told his
teacher with a big smile.

Había sido un largo día en la escuela para

Pascualino. Estaba muy cansado. Había tomado dos
exámenes esa misma mañana y ahora estaba a punto
de comenzar su última hora de clases antes de irse a
casa.
Pascualino vio un ruiseñor posado en la rama de un
árbol fuera de la ventana del aula. Lo miró y lo
escuchó cantar.
Pascualino luego se inclinó sobre su escritorio y
apoyó la cabeza en sus brazos cruzados. Pasaron los
minutos hasta que ya no se dio cuenta de nada y se
sumió en un sueño profundo.
"¡Pascualino! ¡Pascualino!" dijo su profesor de
Estudios Sociales.
"¿Cuánto tiempo llevas dormido? ¿Puedes decirme
qué fue lo último que dije?" le preguntó el maestro.
"¿Qué? Lo siento. ¿Qué estabas diciendo?"
Preguntó Pascualino, desorientado.
"¿Cuál es el tema de la clase hoy?" insistió la
maestra.
"Bueno", Pascualino comenzó a escanear el tablero
en busca de una pista, pero solo pudo ver la palabra
RESPONSABILIDAD escrita en letras mayúsculas
en el centro.
"¿Responsabilidad?" respondió con una media
sonrisa insegura.
"¿De verdad crees que ese es el tema de hoy?" dijo
su maestra con una mirada acusadora.
"¿Sí?" dijo con una carcajada, mientras sus nervios
le estaban fallando.
Fue una situación incómoda para Pascualino.
"Pascualino, debería enviarte a la oficina del
director. No solo te has quedado dormido en clase,
sino que también te reíste en mi cara", dijo
seriamente la maestra.
"¡Señor! No, por favor", dijo Pascualino. "No es así
como sucedió", trató de explicar el niño mientras se
levantaba.
"¿Y ahora te levantas sin mi permiso?" la maestra
señaló mucho más seriamente. "Esto claramente es
una falta de respeto y rebelión de su parte".
"Pero..."
Pascualino trató de defenderse, pero guardó silencio
y volvió a sentarse, agachando la cabeza.
"Esto realmente está mal", pensó Pascualino,
tratando de encontrar una solución a tan horrible
situación.
El aula cayó en un incómodo silencio, y pasaron
unos minutos y nadie dijo nada.
"Pascualino", lo llamó el maestro. "Nuestro tema
para la clase de hoy es: Cumplimiento de la ley",
dijo.
"Lo siento mucho, no era mi intención quedarme
dormido pero", el joven aprovechó la oportunidad
para disculparse pero la maestra lo detuvo.
"Guarda tus excusas. Mañana debes hacer una
presentación a tus compañeros sobre la lección de
hoy", le ordenó la maestra.
"Señor, si ese es el tema, ¿por qué en la pizarra dice
la palabra RESPONSABILIDAD?" razonó
Pascualino. "¿Tienen alguna relación?"
"Esa es tu tarea, no la mía", concluyó el serio
maestro.
"Eso es todo por hoy. Nos vemos mañana para la
presentación principal del Sr. Bravo".
“Y una cosa más: nadie puede decirle a Pascualino
de qué se trataba la clase de hoy”.
"¡Vaya, eso fue fuerte!" William le dijo a
Pascualino cuando la clase había terminado.
"¡No me lo recuerden! No puedo dejar de pensar en
ese momento tan incómodo. Y no quiero ni
imaginarme lo que le dirá el señor Ortiz al director",
le confesó Pascualino a su mejor amigo.
"Mejor dejar de pensar en" qué pasaría si "y
preparar una excelente presentación para mañana",
le aconsejó William.
"Sí, tiene razón, pero creo que el señor Ortiz estaba
furioso hoy. Sabes, en general, suele estar muy
tranquilo y comprensivo. Así que me quedé muy
sorprendido cuando vi su reacción y
comportamiento", confesó Pacualino.
"¡Claro! Pero ya sabes, todos tenemos nuestros días
malos", respondió Will.
"Sí. Deséame buena suerte", dijo Pascualino al
llegar a casa.
"¡Buena suerte! Nos vemos mañana", dijo Will.
Pascualino llegó a su casa, descansó un poco y
luego de un refrigerio ligero comenzó a estudiar
para su presentación.
El tiempo pasó volando mientras investigaba y
preparaba su tarea. Cuando sus padres llegaron a
casa del trabajo, Pascualino decidió pedirles ayuda.
"Creo que ver las noticias esta noche podría
ayudarte. En los últimos meses ha habido muchos
enfrentamientos entre agentes del orden y
ciudadanos", dijo el padre de Pascualino, mientras
encendía la televisión.
"Tu padre tiene razón. Además, el cumplimiento de
la ley debe ser objetivo. La ley existe para
garantizar la libertad y la libertad para todos. Si las
personas son subjetivas y emocionales con respecto
a la ley, puede conducir a situaciones como las que
han hecho titulares de los últimos días ", mencionó
la madre de Pascualino.
Pascualino comenzó a tomar cuidadosas notas de
toda la información que le dieron sus padres, así
como de los diferentes ejemplos que se mostraban
en las noticias.
Después de pasar otras dos horas intercambiando
opiniones e investigando un poco más, Pascualino
se sintió completamente preparado para su
presentación y finalmente comprendió la relación
entre la palabra responsabilidad y el cumplimiento
de la ley.
Al día siguiente se levantó temprano, tomó un buen
desayuno y se preparó para la escuela.
"¿Listo?" William dijo cuando lo vio.
"¡Sí! Mis padres me ayudaron mucho anoche",
confesó Pascualino con una gran sonrisa en el
rostro.
Al llegar a la escuela, Pascualino y William fueron
a tomar asiento en sus lugares y esperaron a que el
Sr. Ortiz comenzara la clase.
"¿Estás listo, Pascualino?" Le preguntó el señor
Ortiz.
"Sí señor", dijo Pascualino mientras caminaba hacia
el frente de la clase para comenzar su presentación.
"Hola a todos. Hoy hablaremos sobre el
cumplimiento de la ley y lo que significa ser
responsable", comenzó Pascualino.
"En general, el concepto de cumplimiento significa
ajustarse a una norma, política, norma o ley. Como
sociedad debemos cumplir con las leyes para que
todos podamos gozar de los mismos derechos y
garantizar una convivencia sana basada en la
igualdad y el respeto, "explicó Pascualino.
"De esta manera, las agencias de aplicación de la
ley se establecen para monitorear y apoyar los
derechos de todos en la sociedad y para asegurar
que todos actúen de manera socialmente
responsable".
El Sr. Ortiz asintió con una leve sonrisa y
Pascualino continuó con su discurso.
"Pero lamentablemente, en nuestro país, ha habido
casos en los que las autoridades abusan de su poder
y no cumplen con su deber y responsabilidad para
con todos los ciudadanos".
El niño hizo una pausa para respirar y continuó: “Y
los funcionarios encargados de hacer cumplir la ley
no solo abusan de su poder a veces, sino que
nosotros, como ciudadanos, no seguimos la ley ni la
respetamos. Por eso tenemos tanta desigualdad. Al
no cumplir con la ley, no todos somos iguales: hay
abuso, privilegio, inequidad, privación de derechos,
etc. ”explicó Pascualino.
"La idea es entender lo que significa ser
responsable. No siempre es así solo culpar a las
autoridades, cuando al final cada uno de nosotros
formamos una sociedad. Depende de cada uno ser
honesto y respetuoso. Es una decisión personal ",
concluyó.
"Y por eso, quiero aceptar públicamente mi
responsabilidad y disculparme por lo ocurrido ayer.
Señor Ortiz, mi intención nunca fue faltarle el
respeto", dijo Pascualino, mirando directamente a su
maestro.
"Lo sé, Pascualino", dijo con una sonrisa
comprensiva.
"Mi actitud de ayer tampoco fue la correcta.
Reaccioné como lo hice para demostrar un punto.
Las leyes crean un foro para que autoridades y
ciudadanos interactúen, o en nuestro caso,
estudiantes y profesores", dijo el profesor con una
sonrisa.
"Entiendo la razón por la que te quedaste dormido
ayer. No fue por rebelión o desinterés en clase, sino
porque te quedaste estudiando hasta tarde ya que
esta es la semana de exámenes, ¿no?" Ortiz
preguntó y Pascualino asintió.
"Mi responsabilidad como autoridad es actuar de
manera apropiada y ética, no dejándome llevar por
mis intereses y emociones personales, sino por el
respeto y la comprensión mutuos".
“Ahora lo entiendo señor Ortiz. Todo esto tenía la
intención de enseñarnos la relación entre el
cumplimiento de la ley y la responsabilidad”, dijo
Pascaulino con una sonrisa.
"Exactamente. Mi decisión de enojarme contigo y
no entender demostró un abuso de mi poder sobre
mis estudiantes. No es la forma correcta de actuar
de un funcionario con poder y autoridad sobre otro".
Pascualino exhaló un suspiro de alivio, sabiendo
que había cumplido con éxito la presentación y que
su maestro no estaba enojado con él, sino que había
aprovechado la situación para enseñarles una
lección sumamente importante.
"La responsabilidad de actuar debe ser compartida
por todos en la sociedad, porque cada persona juega
un papel importante en la construcción conjunta de
una sociedad más justa. Culpar a los demás no es la
solución. La solución es ser responsables y honestos
con nuestras acciones y decisiones".
"Fue una excelente lección. Gracias Sr. Ortiz", le
dijo Pascualino a su maestro con una gran sonrisa.
