Teach
Spelling

Today we will learn about words that are similar in meaning and spelling. When suffixes
are added to words, the sounds of certain consonants within the words often change
or alternate, though their spellings may remain the same. Write the words detect and
detection on the board. Have students read the words with you. In the word detect, the
final t can be clearly heard. In the word detection, the suffix -ion has been added to the
word detect, and the final t now makes a /sh/ sound. Notice how the sound of the final
consonant t changes when -ion is added to detect. However, the spelling remains the
same. Detection is simply detect with the suffix -ion at the end.

The word detect means “to find.” The suffix -ion changes verbs into nouns. It means “the
act, result, or process of.” Therefore, adding -ion to detect forms the word detection,
which means “the act, result, or process of detecting.”

Since these words are similar in meaning, knowing how to spell one can help in spelling
the other. This spelling-meaning connection strategy is good to use when you are
trying to spell an unknown word. For example, when spelling the word detection, one
might not think the last t is in the word. But knowing about the word detect helps to
spell the word detection. These words are related in spelling and meaning.

Let’s look at another example. Write the words confess and confession on the board. Have
students repeat the words after you. What do you notice about these words? Encourage
students to point out the similarities in spellings and meanings. If necessary, define the words
for the students. Help them to recognize the final-consonant sound change from /s/ to /sh/.
Which letters can be clearly heard in the first word but make a /sh/ sound in the second?
(ss) Such changes tend to be predictable because they usually occur in word families,
as in the sample words we just studied. We sometimes forget to write the ss in the word
confession because it makes a /sh/ sound, but thinking about the word confess can help
us remember that the letters ss are in the word.

Distribute “Adding -ion Word Cards” (Student Activity 1). Here are the words with consonant
alternations that we will be analyzing. Read the words on the sheet with the students.
Discuss and define any words that students may not be familiar with. Have students identify
what the words have in common. Students should see that the words consist of base words
and their -ion (noun) forms and that the base words end in either -ct or -ss. Notice how in
each -ion (noun) form, the base word is still spelled exactly the same. Therefore, we can
conclude that when spelling the noun forms of most base words ending in -ct or -ss, we
can just add -ion.

Teach (cont.)
We’ve seen several words with the –ion ending. Another way to create the /shun/ sound
on the end of the word is to add –ian. When you add –ian to a word that ends in a c such
as magic, the /k/ sound at the end of the word is replaced with the /shun/ sound, just
Spelling

like words that end in –ion. Words that end in –cian usually describe an occupation
or a job. Remember, when you write the word, the c stays where it is, just add the –ian
ending. Say the word magician and spell the word magician. Other words that are similar
to this include musician, optician, logician, clinician, politician, and technician. Practice
writing and spelling these words.

Guided Practice
Have the following sentences written on the board:

After receiving a letter of __________________ from his university of choice, Jeremy had to enroll
in a local community college instead.

His __________________ of being a doctor prevented him from learning how to fly an airplane.

The result of __________________ is called the difference.

We should have a __________________ about the best way to study for a spelling test.

Read each sentence aloud with the students. For each sentence, have students discuss which
word from “Adding -ion Word Cards” (Student Activity 1) best belongs in the blank. Direct and
correct when necessary. Randomly select a student to write the correct word in the blank.
Discuss how each word is spelled by simply adding -ion to a base word.

Independent Practice
Distribute “Adding -ion Without a Spelling Change” (Student Activity 2). Read aloud the
directions of the activity, and discuss them with the students briefly to make sure that they
understand what to do. If necessary, complete the first sentence together. Have students
complete the activity.

Expanding Understanding
Spelling

In the last lesson, we learned about how to spell words with consonant alternations. Tell
me what you remember about spelling these words. Discuss what students learned in the
last lesson.

Write the word elect on the board. How do I add the suffix -ion to this word to spell the
word election? Have students tell you what to do. Follow students’ directions. Correct
students when necessary. Repeat the process for the words expression and selection.

Guided Practice
Redistribute or have students take out “Adding -ion Word Cards” (Student Activity 1), and
have students cut apart the words and shuffle them. Then, have students pair up the words
by making two columns. One column should consist of the base words, and the other should
consist of the matching -ion words. Each base word should appear next to its matching -ion
(noun) form (e.g., infect and infection). Then, have students subdivide the two columns into
four columns, while keeping the pairs of words together. The first two columns should consist
of the base words ending in -ct and their -ion (noun) forms. The next two columns should
consist of the base words ending in -ss and their -ion (noun) forms. Monitor students as they
work to guide their practice. Assist when necessary. If you notice that a word is in an incorrect
place, guide the student in finding the mistake instead of pointing it out.

Independent Practice
Make sure each student has his or her word cards and notebook. Have each student write
the four headings below across the top of a page and then record each word from the cards
in the appropriate column. Remind students that each base word should appear next to its
matching -ion (noun) form (e.g., infect and infection).

-ct -ct + -ion -ss -ss + -ion

Have the students store their cards in envelopes or plastic bags.

Expanding Understanding
Spelling

Redistribute or have students take out their Adding -ion Word Cards. Provide five minutes for
partners to take turns reading the word cards to each other. If a partner experiences difficulty
reading a word, the other partner should help. If both students need assistance with a
particular word, students should record the word in their notebooks so that they may discuss
it with you.

Guided Practice
Make sure students have their Adding -ion Word Cards. The students will participate in a “No
Peeking” writing sort. Give a blank sheet of paper to each student. Have each student fold the
paper lengthwise in fourths and label the four sections like the following:

-ct -ct + -ion -ss -ss + -ion

Then, have each student secretly select 10 cards from his or her Adding -ion Word Cards.
Finally, assign partners, and have students follow the instructions detailed below:
1. Partner 1 reads aloud his or her 10 words one at a time for Partner 2 to write.
2. After a word is read aloud, Partner 2 repeats the word aloud and writes it correctly in
the appropriate section.
3. After writing all 10 words, Partner 2 checks his or her spelling using Partner 1’s cards.
4. Any words that are not spelled correctly should be corrected by Partner 2. Then, the
partners switch roles.

Independent Practice
Make sure students have their notebooks. Distribute “Read, Cover, Remember, Spell”
(Student Activity 3). Explain that students will do an activity that will help them spell words
with consonant alternations. The students are to follow these steps for each word on the
worksheet:
1. Read the word.
2. Cover the word with your hand.
3. Remember what you just read.
4. Spell the covered word on your paper (without peeking).
5. Check to see whether you spelled the word correctly.
6. Write any misspelled words in your notebook.
7. Review misspelled words.
Monitor students as they work, and make anecdotal

Redistribute or have students take out their Adding -ion Word Cards. Provide three to five
minutes for students to practice reading and sorting their Adding -ion Word Cards. Students
may use the words detect, detection, confess, and confession as key words to help them sort
the remaining words. Walk around and observe students as they read and sort the words.

Guided and Independent Practice

Distribute “Consonant Alternations Word Search” (Student Activity 4) to students. Read
aloud the directions of the activity, and discuss them with the students briefly to make sure
that they understand what to do. If necessary, find the first word together. Have students
