This course provides the students with the overview of nursing as a science, an art and a profession. It deals with the concepts of man as holistic being compromised of bio-
psycho-socio and spiritual dimension. It includes a discussion on the different roles of nurses emphasizes health promotion, maintenance of health as well as prevention of
illness utilizing the nursing process. It includes the basic nursing skills need in the care of individual clients.

Prerequisites: Biochemistry, Theoretical Foundation of Nursing

Course Objectives/ Outcome:

student shall be able to:


1. Utilize the nursing process in the care of individuals, families in community and hospital settings.
 Assess the clients with his/her condition though mental status examination, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic procedures.
 Identify actual and potential nursing diagnosis.
 Plans appropriate nursing interventions with clients and family for identified nursing diagnosis.
 Implement plan of care with clients and family.
 Evaluate the progress of his/her their clients condition and outcomes of care.
2. Apply knowledge and understanding of maladaptive patterns of behavior in providing safe and quality care to clients.
3. Increase self-awareness and therapeutic use of self in the care of clients.
4. Ensure with clients and their family and the health team appropriately.
5. Observe bioethical concepts/principles, core values and nursing standards in the care of clients.
6. Promote personal and professional growth of self and others.

Classroom Policies:
1. Uniform and dress code
a. Students should be in proper uniform, wear school ID and appropriate shoes except during laboratory class.
b. On Fridays, students are allowed to be in their civilian clothes with organizational shirts only.
c. PE uniform should be worn only during PE class.
2. Attendance, tardiness and absenteeism
a. Minimum of 80% attendance of the total contact hours in the subject is required (checking is done every meeting)
b. Tardiness of 15 minutes is equivalent to one hour period of absence
c. A minimum of 2 consecutive absences without justifiable reasons
d. Failure to take the prelim exam preceded by absence means “drop” in the subject

e. Failure to attend regular classes after taking the prelim exam means of grade of 5.0 in the subject
3. Taking Examinations
a. Cheating and copying are strictly prohibited, “when caught cheating during quizzes and long exams, deduction of points will be imposed”,
during mid-term or final exams, means a grade of 5.0 in the subject.
b. Borrowing of calculators and other exam paraphernalia is not allowed during exams.
c. During mid-term and final exams, only answer sheets, permits, calculators, pens, pencils and erasers are allowed on the desk; other things
should be deposited on a place designated by the teacher
d. Other policies will be imposed as deemed necessary and agreed upon between the students and the subject professor.
4. Other Policies
a. Cellphones should be shut-off during class hours
b. Chairs should be arranged before leaving the classroom
c. Vandalism is strictly prohibited and punishable
d. No smoking within the school premises
e. Students under the influence of liquor are not allowed inside the school compound
f. Any form of deadly weapons should not be brought to school except cleaning/cutting tools during clean-up days and laboratory classes
g. Unnecessary noise to the point of creating disturbances is prohibited
h. Proper grooming should be observed (i.e. short and undyed hair for males)
i. Other policies will be strictly imposed as contained in the student handbook
