Review of Section Properties

Before we jump in to equivalent loads let’s do a quick review of section properties. All of the stress
calculations that we do in this book will depend upon the elastic section properties of the members, so it’s
important to start off on the right foot.

Rectangular Beam Example:

c.g.c. =

yt = yb =
& S=
In general: I = ∑Io + ∑Ad2 & S = I/y
Tee-Beam Example:

Rectangle Area, A y̅ (in) A y̅ (in3) d (in) Io (in4) Ad2 (in4)

(in2)

1 48(6) = 6/2 = 3 864 13.67 - 3 = 48(6)3/12 = 32,789

288 10.67 864

2 14(30) = 30/2 + 6 = 8,820 21 - 13.67 14(30)3/12 22,566

420 21 = 7.33 = 31,500

 708 32,364 55,355

48 in 6 in 6 in 2 30 in 14 in 6 in 30 in

c. g. c. 13.67 in from the top
708 in

 yt = 13.67 in ; yb = 36 in – 13.67 in = 22.33 in

I = ∑Io + ∑Ad2 = 32,364 in4 + 55,355 in4 = 87,719 in4

St = I/yt = 87,719 in4 / 13.67 in = 6,417 in3 & Sb = I/yb = 87,719 in4 / 22.33 in = 3,928 in3
