Rizal Monument is a memorial in Rizal Park, Manila that designed for the
executed Filipino nationalist Jose Rizal. The inscription on the front of the pedestal
reads: “To the memory of Jose Rizal, patriot and martyr, executed in Bagumbayan Field
on December 30, 1896. To foster the development of moral character, personal
discipline, citizenship and also the vocational efficiency among the Filipino youth. And
as well as to develop an understanding and appreciation of the qualities, behavior and
character of Dr. Jose Rizal. This park plays a very significant role in the citizens and the
culture of the Philippines.
The monument depicts Rizal in overcoat holding a book that represents his
novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The obelisk is usually taken to mean
Rizal’s masonic background while the three stars stand for Luzon, Visayas, and
Mindanao. The figures at the back of the monument, such as leaves and a pot are said
to symbolize the country’s natural resources. The consensus are the figures beside
Rizal – a mother rearing her child and two young boys reading – signify family and
education. The precise place of Rizal’s execution is about 100 meters north-northwest
of the memorial. In the field, lifesize dioraas portraying his final moments can be seen.
