1. What are some new communication technologies you know? How do these
technologies affect the way we communicate today?
Some of the new communication technologies are smartphone, computer,
and laptop and these can connect to internet, thus allows us to use social media
which consists of applications that connects us to others worldwide. Not just
these equipment and programs are easy to access but talking to others virtually
and sharing information conserve time, effort, and resources. In just one click, we
could communicate and see our love ones even if they are from the other side of
the globe. These technologies made our communication way easier and more
convenient than before.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of globalization?
For others, globalization is bad, and the reasons are- it fuels inequality
which makes the rich richer and the poor poorer, it makes us vulnerable to
infectious diseases, it introduces an economic model that is incompatible with
environmental protection, and it increases international competition which
creates a race to the bottom. Even so, it still brought many advantages such as
creating more job and business opportunities, decreases cultural barriers,
promotes peace, improves domestic productivity by expanding knowledge, and it
even improved access to technology allowing us to connect with anyone from
different part of the world.
3. Why is communicating in a multicultural setting inevitable in business opportunities?
Catherine Pulsifer says that in order to see an opportunity, we must be
open to all thoughts. Since diversity exist in the corporate world, it is important to
know and understand the others’ culture and communicating with them builds
trust. Business opportunity, when you think about it, is about gathering people to
work together to achieve a certain goal. Thus, when in a multicultural setting
where people of different nationalities and cultures are present, communication is
the key that brings them together.

I. Develop short dialogues showing intercultural communication using the situations


below.

Scenario 1:
Meeting a new acquaintance who came from Mindanao during the first day at school.
You do not share the same language and you came from different cultures.

Me: Kumusta, ako si Loricel at mula ako sa Batangas. Saang eskwelahan ka nagtapos?
Acquaintance: Sorry, I cannot understand Tagalog since I am from Mindanao. But I can speak
and understand English.
Me: Oh, sorry I don’t know it. So again, my name is Loricel and I’m from Batangas. From what
school did you last attend to?
Acquaintance: My name is Shiela and I graduated from University of Southeastern Philippines.
How about you?
Scenario 2:
An English-speaking foreigner asking directions from a native. The native does not
speak the English language fluently.

Foreigner: Hi, excuse me. I am lost so may I ask for direction?


Native: Ah, yes, yes.
Foreigner: I’m going to this store, but I’m confused and don’t know what direction to take.
Native: Ah…You walk straight then turn to…right. Then walk again and go left. When you see
a… big tree, that’s it.
