Quarter 1: Week 3-4 Substances and Mixture

Background Information
The world is filled with different kinds of materials. These include those that you can
see such as people, animals, and plants, as well as those that you cannot see such as air.
These materials are all forms of matter, or anything that has mass and occupies space.
Indeed, matter includes all things around you.
Matter

Matter can be classified into substances or mixtures. A substance is matter with

definite or fixed composition and distinct properties. This means that the properties of a
substance do not change, no matter where the substance is found. Salt and water are
examples of substances.
Mixtures

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that do not react chemically

with each other and retain their distinct identities despite their being combined. For example,
sugar and water are two substances with distinct properties and composition. In terms of
taste, for instance, sugar tastes sweet while water is tasteless. When you stir a teaspoon of
sugar into a glass of water, you form a mixture even as sugar and water retain their
properties and composition in the mixture. A mixture can be solid, liquid, and gas.
Substances
Substances are classified into elements and compounds. All materials found in the
environment are composed of the simplest form of matter called element, a substance
that is composed of only one kind of atom. There are 118 known elements found in the
periodic table of elements. It cannot be decomposed into simpler substances through
ordinary chemical means. For example, gold is an element that is used for jewelry. Heating a
ring made of gold even at a very high temperature will not change the gold into another
substance. During boiling the temperature of a substance changes at the start then it
becomes the same, and during melting a substance melt completely/smoothly within a short
period of time. A substance can be solid, liquid, and gas.
Elements are also referred to as the building blocks of matter because when they
react with each other, they form compounds. A compound is a substance that is made up of
two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions by mass. When you look at
the labels of many food products, you will see a list of compounds such as salt,
carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Examples of compounds are carbon dioxide, iron oxide,
sodium chloride and silicon dioxide.
Mixtures play an important role in the daily activities of people. Both seawater and
freshwater are complex mixtures of many substances. The air you breathe is a mixture of
several gases. The gasoline that runs machines contains from 12 to 200 different
substances. Products that are commonly used at homes such as liquid and bar soaps,
bleaching agents, dyes, paint, and milk. Alloys are mixture of two or more metals. Brass is
an Alloy of copper and zinc. Mixtures are grouped into two: homogeneous and
heterogeneous mixtures
Analyze the following to understand better the classification.

Learning Competency:
Distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set of properties. S7MT-Ie-f4 wk-4

Activity 1: S and M PICTURE

Directions: Classify the following pictures or symbols as to substance or mixture. Draw if
the picture or symbol is substance and if it is a mixture on the space provided.
Activity 2: Eureka! Substance or Mixture?

Directions: Read the Scenario below and answer the questions. Write your answer on the
space provided.

Nathan wants

Nathan wants to compare the chemical properties of two unknown liquids. In doing it,
he prepared two beaker containing liquids. Nathan labeled the beaker liquid A and liquid B.
From time he checked the boiling points of the liquids and found, 100 0C for liquid A and 1100C
to 1130C for liquid B.

How could you classify the two liquids? (5 points each)

Liquid A is : ____________________________________________________________
Why? : ____________________________________________________________
: ____________________________________________________________

Liquid B is : ____________________________________________________________
Why? : ____________________________________________________________
: ____________________________________________________________

Activity 3: Let’s Go Surfing!

Directions: Go to your kitchen and look for examples of substances and mixtures. Draw 5
substances and 5 mixtures that you have found on your kitchen on the box
provided. Parental Guidance is advised. See attach rubric.

Students Expectation Possible Points Score

1. Drawings look like what 5
was observed.
2. Drawing is accurately 5
labeled.
3. Drawing has a title that 5
helps explain the content
4. Drawing is neat, accurate 5
