Four behavioural characteristics of

people from the Islamic perspective:
Keys for improvement
By
Prof. Amran Rasli, PhD

Life is all about how we see ourselves
based on a bell shaped distribution
This is the bell shaped curve or statistically termed as normal distribution.
The normal distribution, also known as the Gaussian distribution, is a probability
distribution that is symmetric about the mean and has a skewness of zero,
showing that data near the mean are more frequent in occurrence than data far
from the mean.
The normal distribution model is motivated by the Central Limit Theorem.

It is interesting that human behaviour also follows some forms of

1. They understand the team's goals. They know how their role supports the team's goals. They don't blindly follow orders
because somebody told them to.
2. They help and encourage their teammates. They don't hog the credit for team wins. However, if the team is struggling,
they don't keep their mouth shut about the problems they see only in order to avoid making waves. They tell the truth,
even when the leader or someone else doesn't want to hear it (especially then)!
3. They are honest with their teammates, their leaders and themselves. If one of their ideas is unpopular, they don't force
others to fit in with their ideas.
4. They keep their commitments. A real star player communicates their own expectations and clarifies other people's
expectations of them.
5. They deliver good news and bad news when it is appropriate to do so. They don't hide bad news or ignore it only to
avoid telling somebody what they aren't ready to hear.
6. They don't assume that their leader has all the answers, but they don't talk about the leader or anybody else behind
their backs. If they don't respect the leadership of the organization they work or play for, they move to another
organization. They don't waste energy and bring their teammates down by complaining.
7. They set boundaries. Even if they have commitments, they are uncomfortable saying "I won't be reachable at all this
weekend" or "I will look over your report in the morning -- I have to get going now to catch my train."
8. If they run into a conflict with anyone on the team, they address it. They get issues out on the table and dealt with.
9. They value their teammates' contributions and their own.
10. They grow their muscles and their mojo all the time and help their teammates do the same.

The Solid Citizen is not a flashy person, and will not likely set the world on fire, but
he/she is someone you’d like to have on your side when you’ve got work to get done.
The Solid Citizen does the work consistently and ably, and has solid skills that he/she
employs in a dependable and trustworthy fashion. The Solid Citizen is generally content
with his/her role in the organization, usually as a solid individual contributor, not looking
to take on management or administrative responsibilities. He/she works well with others
in a collaborative approach. When you give an assignment to a Solid Citizen, you have
high confidence that it will be done on time, with high quality, and with little fuss.
The Solid Citizen is the foot soldier that is essential to a successful organization; not
everyone can or wants to be a superstar or the star player.

A learner is someone new to the organization. The learner could also be

someone who had worked in the same organization, but has been promoted or
given new responsibilities. Sometimes it takes time and patience for a staffer to
get up to speed on new job responsibilities. Even the most qualified and
productive individuals can be slow learners when it comes to mastering new
processes, tasks and procedures. To help speed the process and ensure the
employee is comfortable, confident and effective, make allowances for the
learning curve and support his efforts in any way possible.

Think of a dead-wood employee as a fallen log. The log was once a brilliant, growing
tree that provided oxygen to the atmosphere, food to plant eaters, shade to the
overheated and shelter to numerous woodland creatures. At some point, the tree
stopped growing and lay on the ground, no longer growing and providing only minimal
use to anyone or anything. This sounds like a the beginning to a fairy tale, but it can
frustrate a saint when this fallen employee works for you.
Dead-wood employees were once productive members of the organization but over time began
working less, gossiping more and generally finding reasons for not completing the tasks assigned
to them. They become psychic vampires who place a drain on company resources and create an
air of negativity that brings down the morale of everyone around them. These unproductive
employees may feel entitled to the job because of tenure or past accomplishments, and they no
longer see a correlation between a job well done and job security.

So how do we see ourselves?
• Look into a mirror, self-reflect upon yourself
• Muhasabah continuously and change for the

‘The jihad against nafs!’
It is fitting to discuss a reported story that singularly
shows the prominence that the Prophet Muhammad
s.a.w gave to mujahadah an-nafs. Upon returning
from one battle, the Messenger of Allah said to his
companions: ‘We have returned from the smaller
jihad to the greater jihad. The Prophet’s reference to
‘the smaller jihad’ was clear to the companions but
some could not understand what he meant by ‘the
greater jihad’. When asked about that term, the
Prophet replied : ‘The jihad against nafs!’
