The French Revolution began in 1789 when the peasant class rose up against
the old feudalist system.
Carlos IV was the one who reigned in Spain.

La Revolución Francesa comenzó en 1789 cuando la clase campesina se levantó
contra el viejo sistema feudalista.
Carlos IV era quien reinaba en España.
2.- Who and what allowed the French army to pass through Spain?
Manuel Godoy was a young general who signed a secret treaty (Treaty of
Fontainebleau) with France to conquer and divide Portugal together. Instead of
passing through Spain, French forces began to occupy fortresses in the north
and center of the country.

Manuel Godoy fue un joven general que firmó un tratado secreto (Tratado de

5.- Where was the Constitution of 1812 written? List some of its ideas.
While most of the country was under French occupation, Cádiz was still under
Spanish control. Using new liberal ideas spread by the French revolution,
delegates wrote the Constitution of 1812. It was approved on 19 March 1812
and was the first constitution in Spanish history.

Mientas la mayor parte del país estaba bajo ocupación francesa, Cádiz seguía
bajo control español. Utilizando nuevas ideas liberales difundidas por la

aprobada el 19 de marzo de 1812 y fue la primera constitución de la historia de
España.

Fernando VII returns to the throne and declares the Constitution of 1812 ilegal.
This marks the return of absolute monarchy.

7.- What happened to Spain’s colonies during the 19 th century? Why?
As early as the 19th century, the Spanish and Portuguese colonial empires
decayed and almost disappeared with the process of independence of their
colonies which was an indirect consequence of the Napoleonic wars, the
example of the American War of Independence and the French Revolution.

Ya en el siglo XIX, los imperios coloniales Español y Portugués decaen y casi
desaparecen con el proceso de independencia de sus colonias que fue

Charles's supporters want a more traditional absolute monarch. They create a
political party called the Carlists. The First Carlist War begins, which lasts eight
years.
