Q.1: Discuss the salient features of the Weiss theory of spontaneous magnetization. [2]
Q.2: Discuss PE hysteresis loop of a ferroelectric material using the domains concept. Give
one very relevant application of a ferroelectric material exhibiting large saturation and remnant
polarization and large coercive field. [2]
Q.3: Discuss how realistic is the potential used in Kronig-Penney model to explain the band
structure of crystalline materials. Explain four major achievements of this model. [2]

Q.4: Consider a helium atom in ground state. The mean radius in the Langevin formula may
be approximated by Bohr radius 0.529 Å. The density of helium is 0.178 Kg/m3. Calculate the
diamagnetic susceptibility of a helium atom. [2]

Q.5: Explain two achievements of the Weiss theory of ferromagnetism. [2]

Q.6: Estimate the Debye temperature of gold if its atomic weight is 197, the density is 1.9 x
104 kg/m3 and the speed of sound in gold is 2100 m/s. (Given; h = 6.63 x 10-34 Js, KB = 1.3807
x 10-23 JK-1, NA = 6.022 x 1023 mol-1). [2]

Q.7: The superconducting band gap (Eg) of tin (Sn) is 1.15 meV. Find the wavelength of
electromagnetic radiation that would be strongly absorbed by the superconductor. [2]

Q.8: Which of the following is a Fermion: [1]

(a) Phonon (b) Magnon (c) Plasmon (d) Cooper pair (e) none of these.
