Simulation of electrostatic and
magnetostatic systems
Simulation software You can use simulation software to evaluate a new design, diagnose problems with an existing design, and
(e.g., MATLAB) could test a system under conditions that are hard to reproduce, such as a satellite in outer space.
help students predict
the behavior of To run a simulation, you need a mathematical model of your system, which can be expressed as a block
electrostatic and diagram, schematic, state diagram, or even code.
magnetostatic
systems. Simulation software also includes visualization tools, such as data displays and 3D animation, to help
monitor the simulation as it runs.

Engineers and Creating and simulating models is less expensive than building and testing hardware prototypes.
scientists use
simulation software
for a variety of They use simulation software to test different designs before building one in hardware.
reasons:
Simulation software can be connected to hardware to test the integration of the full design.

Creating a
MathWorks
Account
Creating a MathWorks Account
Note:
▪ Please perform these steps if you’ve never created a MathWorks account,
or have never used MATLAB.
▪ Use you BatStateU email address when creating account.
▪ You’ll need to create a MathWorks account before you can download from
BatStateU MATLAB license.

Creating a MathWorks Account
1.Go to mathworks.com.
2.Click on the link “Create Account”, located at the upper right-hand corner
of the page.
3.On the create account page, complete all required fields (Note: Make sure
you enter your BatStateU e-mail address.) Click “Continue” when you’re
done.
4.On the “Customization Information” page, complete fields as appropriate.
(For the question on how you plan to use the software, select “Academic
Use” from the drop-down list.)

Creating a MathWorks Account
5. Click “Continue”.
A page will be displayed with steps you’ll need to perform (check for e-
mail from MATLAB, click on the link in the e-mail) so that your e-mail
address can be verified. Important: Do not close this window until you’ve
completed these steps.
6. Click “Continue” after you’ve completed the steps to verify your e-mail
address. You will be returned to the MathWorks home page, and will be
logged in to your new MathWorks account.

Next week on Electrostatics and Magnetostatics

1. Sketch the induced charge distribution on a conductor placed in an

electric field.
2. Explain what happens to a conductor when it is placed in an electric
field, and sketch the 𝐄 field inside and outside a conducting sphere
placed in an electric field.
3. State Coulomb’s Law and use it to solve for 𝐄 above a line of charge,
a loop of charge, and a circular disk of charge.
