Week 1

PROGRESS CHECK
I. Discuss the basic use of the following meters.

1. Ohmmeter - a type of electronic device that is used to measure the resistance placed
between leads or mainly used for calculating electrical resistance of a circuit.
2. Voltmeter - an instrument used to measure the voltage or the potential difference in volts.
3. Ammeter - it is used to measure the current.
4. Multi-tester or VOMII - This is a type of electronic measuring instrument that combines
several measurement functions in one unit, it has the ability to measure voltage, current and
resistance.

II. What are the different types of Ohmmeter?

1. SERIES TYPE OHMMETER

2. SHUNT TYPE OHMMETER
3. MULTI- RANGE OHMMETER

III. What are the different types of Voltmeter?

1. PMMC VOLTMETER
2. MI VOLTMETER
3. ELCTRO- DYNAMOMETER VOLTMETER
4. RECTIFIER VOLTMETER
5. ANALOGUE VOLTMETER
6. DIGITAL VOLTMETER

VI. What are the different types of Ammeter?

1. PERMANENT MOVING COIL AMMETER

2. MOVING IRON AMMETER
3. ELECTRO-DYNAMOMETER AMMETER
4. RECTIFIER TYPE AMMETER
Week 2
PROGRESS CHECK
I. Answer the following questions.

1. Describe in your own terms what "electricity" really is.

Electricity is defined as the flow of negative charges in the conductor. In other words,
the continuous flow of electrons in an electric circuit is called an electric current. The
conducting material consists a large number of free electrons which move from one atom to
the other at random.
2. Voltage is generally referred to as "electrical strain." Moreover, the voltage unit can be defined
in terms of more specific physical units. Which are those units, and how are they connected to
the volt unit?
Those units are E (Voltage/Volts), W (Work/Joules), and Q (Charge/Coulombs) and
they’re connected to a volt unit in such a way that it gives clearer answers to summations
and problems that leads to understanding of how electricity works.
3. Explain, using your own words, what the electrical terms voltage, current and resistance mean.

The Voltage is an electrical pressure between two different points or locations, the
Current is the flow of electrons and the resistance is the opposition to the flow of electrons.

4. Which measuring units are used to convey voltage, current and resistance levels?

Voltage is measured in the units of volts (V), Current is measured in the units of
amperes or amp’s (A) and Resistance is measured in the units of Ohms (Ω)

5. Why is the difference between Electricity from DC and AC?

DC or Direct Current is an electrical current that moves in a one direction only while AC
or Alternating Current is an electrical current that periodically reverses/alternates
direction.
II. Solve the following problems.

1. Calculate the total of current (I) in this circuit that will pass through the resistor;

E 12 v
I= = =0.0255319149
R 470 Ω

2. What is the value of resistor in ohms?

E 12.3 v
R= = =3 Ω
I 4.556 A

3. Give the values of the following resistor color

codes;
Yellow, Violet, Orange, Silver

47 KΩ , ±10 %
Week 3
PROGRESS CHECK
Test I - Identification type. Write the correct answer on the space provided before each number.

____ WORK ____ 1. It is the accomplishment of motion against the action of a force which tends to
oppose the motion.

___JOULE____ 2. It is the basic unit of electric energy or work.

_British Thermal Unit (Btu)_ 3. The English unit of Heat energy

__Power__ ___ 4. It is the rate of doing work and the common unit is watt.

___ENERGY___5. It is the capacity to do work.

Test II- Problem Solving.

1. A teakettle contains 3 pounds of water at room temperature (68°F). If 20% of the electric energy to
the stove element under the kettle is lost by radiation and in heating the kettle itself, how much electric
energy, must be supplied to the element to bring the water to the boiling point?

Mechanical work, W = Force x Distance

= 3 lbs. x farenhight

2. A 10- kΩ resistor is connected into a circuit where the current through it is 50 ma. What is the
minimum safe power rating for a resistor to be used in this circuit?

3. At P2 / kw- hr, how much will it cost to leave a 60W lamp burning for 5 days?
