Before you start

2. The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel, constructed during 1887-9
and opened in 1889 for the World Fair held in Paris that year. It is located on the
Champs de Mars in the west of Paris and was for many years the tallest building in
the city. Many Parisians hated the structure at first but now it is a national symbol.
Visitors can go up to the top of the Tower by means of a series of lists. There
are visitor attractions and cafes/restaurants on the first two floors, and an amazing
view from the third.
The Tower is open every day of the year from 9.30 in the morning until 11.00
