History of the Cooperative Movement

Answer the following questions based from the video presentation posted in the GClassroom.
1. Who is the Father of the Cooperative Movement?
Robert Owen 1771–1858 is considered as the father of the cooperative movement. A Welshman
who made his fortune in the cotton exchange, Owen put stock in placing his laborers in a decent
climate with admittance to instruction for them as well as their kids.
2. What is the first ever cooperative in the World?
The first ever cooperative in the world is Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society In 1844 a group of
28 artisans working in the cotton mills in the town of Rochdale, in the north of England
established the first modern cooperative business, the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society, also
known as the Rochdale Pioneers.
3. Identify what is the other term for each law that was issued in the Philippines to regulate the
cooperatives:

4. Differentiate “State-initiated Cooperatives” and “Privately-initiated Cooperatives” .


Privately-initiated is towards this end, the Government and all its branches, subdivisions,
instrumentalities and agencies shall ensure the provision of technical guidance, financial
assistance and other services to enable said cooperatives to develop into viable and responsive
economic enterprises and thereby bring about a strong cooperative movement that is free from
any conditions that might infringe upon the autonomy or organizational integrity of
cooperatives. The state initiated cooperatives. International Cooperative Alliance is the global
steward of the Statement on the Cooperative Identity the Values and Principles of the
cooperative movement. A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united
voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a
jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise. Cooperatives are based on the values of
self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. In the tradition of their
founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social
responsibility and caring for others.
5. What does FACOMA stand for?
FACOMA stands for the words Farmers Cooperative Marketing Association.
It is an association that helps farmers buy their own farming equipment.
This way, farmers will have a bigger income. It would be easier for them to cultivate their own
land than to work for the landowners.
