Creating VISTA Velocity Format File from OMNI 3D Velocities

• VISTA is not only a robust, stand-alone seismic processing software package but it also provides
users easy-to-use tools to convert file formats so that other applications that are generally not

Schlumberger
compatible to communicate with each other.

Schlumberger-Private
• In this presentation, we use VISTA to convert OMNI 3D velocity files

Private – Customer Use

• From OMNI 3D, we will save its velocities into a Vista Velocity Format file

• Then we will load this file into VISTA and convert it to a VISTA dataset
OMNI 3D – Create a Bin Grid for the Velocity File (1 of 2)

• When we convert our velocities, OMNI

3D will reference a bin grid to assign

Schlumberger
Schlumberger-Private
inline and crossline information to the
VISTA velocity file.

Private – Customer Use

• From a survey geometry, right click on
its script and save the bin grid definition
to a file.
OMNI 3D – Create a Bin Grid for the Velocity File (2 of 2)

• Select the Grid

definition tab

• Save the grid
definition to a file
• We will use this
file in the next
step
OMNI 3D – Velocities and Survey Display

• Displayed here is the geometry (shot

and receiver lines/stations) we used in
the previous step to define the bin grid

• Also displayed are the velocities
(color map)

Private – Customer Use

• The OMNI 3D velocities are RMS
velocities from the 3D Grid tutorial
project
OMNI 3D – Save Velocities to VISTA Format File (1 of 4)

• These are the same velocities, but now

displayed in the 3D View

Schlumberger

• We want to convert these velocities into a
format VISTA can read.

Private – Customer Use

• Select Utilities

• Velocity Files

• Convert OMNI to VISTA
