MUAY THAI
Basic Rules
 Matches formally must not have more than 5 rounds and each round last for three minutes. There is
a two-minute rest between matches and no additional round is allowed.
 Two competitors pit against each other in a boxing ring (small; 6.10 x 6.10 meters and large; 7.30 x
7.30 meters) with four ropes stretched and linked to four corner posts.
 The ring floor must be placed at least 1.20 meters from the ground, but not more than 1.50 meters.
 The fighter will win the contest by knocking the opponent out, technical knockout (opponent being
stopped by the referee as unfit to carry on, or winning on points.
 The fighter can use punches, elbows, knees and kicks. They can also occasionally use clinch and
grapple techniques
 To compete in professional Muay Thai fight, the fighter must be at least 15 years old and with no
physical disability. Minimum weight is 100 pounds (43.56 kg).
 Weight Divisions

 Fighters are classified into weight divisions and there must not be a difference of 5 pounds
in weight.
 Fighters are required to use Gloves and the weight depends on their weight division. They
are also required to wear bandages that are only soft material type. Fighters are not allowed
to use their personal hand bandages and hand wrapping are inspected by an authorized
official.

 Fighters are required to wear shorts but are not allowed to wear shirts and shoes. They are
permitted to wear ankle cap.
 Wai Kru
A tradition or ritual perform by fighters before the start of the fight with dance elements
to pay respects to their teacher.
 Scoring System
- There are three judges that will score the fight.
- A fighter will be awarded a score when they use their fist, feet, knees and elbows to hit
their opponent accurately, powerfully, unprotected and according to the rules.
- The winner of the round will be awarded 10 points and his opponent may be given 9-8-7
points in proportion.
- In case of a draw in a round, both fighters will score full 10 points (10:10)
- Any fighter who commits a violation to the rules or foul will have their points deducted.

Basic Skills
 Stance, Balance, and Rhythm
Should be ready when to attack, defend or move out of the way. Always in control of your
balance and weight. Stance is important as it will dictate your balance and rhythm.
Stance:
1. Feet wide apart in line with shoulder.
2. Dominant foot half step back (Stronger foot to kick), other foot half step forward.
3. Knees slightly bend and fist up to the level of your cheekbones.
4. Wrists should be straight, knuckles facing out, palms facing in, at about a 45-degree angle to
your face.
5. Elbows a fist away from your ribs and chin tucked into your chest.
 Body parts used in Muay Thai -Art of eight limbs” for the eight parts of the body that are used
for striking: the two hands, two legs (shins, mostly), two elbows, and two knees.

 5 Defensive skills essential in Muay Thai

1. Defensive Timing – requires you to have speed and reflexes to react to your opponent
strikes. Timing is very important to execute a defensive technique.
2. Footwork and balance – help you evade a lot of strikes and control the range of the fight.
Balance is needed to control your weight.
3. Head movement - good head movement can avoid a lot of damage. Having a stationary
head will be an easy target.
4. An effective Teep- efficient defensive tool to disrupt an opponent’s offensive technique. It is
like a boxing jab but with the use of the feet.
5. A strong guard - having your hands up at the right time will prevent you getting knocked out
by your opponent’s strikes

1. Immediate response – Responding or hitting back after getting hit.
2. Blocking and countering
3. Catching kicks and countering
4. Controlling the distance of the fight- control your balance and footwork.
5. Exploding on the offense – to land devasting strikes and blows.
6. Utilizing feints on offense- to create openings and set up a strike.
7. Chaining Punches- throwing multiple strikes at an opponent makes it very difficult to defend
all of the incoming strikes.

FACILITIES/COURT/FIELD

 Court/Field: Actual game - Boxing ring (small; 6.10 x 6.10 meters and large; 7.30 x 7.30

 Facilities
a) Muay Thai program is housed in a 560sm. (6,000sf.) open-air training building.
b) 8m high roofing provides amazing views of the surrounding jungle and mountainscape and, with
our higher elevation
c) The building is also equipped with a state-of-the-art, motorized shade system that can
completely enclose the facility for privacy or in case of rain.
d) The entire open training area is covered with 20mm thick floor matting to protect the soles of
your feet from uncomfortable chafing, tears or cuts.
e) High definition CCTV system has cameras throughout this training area and will soon broadcast
exclusive training and VIP sessions live on our website.
