CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYMERS
The results show that a band near 1418 cm- 1 occurs only
for polyethylene having two molecules in a unit cell and is,
therefore, not the CH2 wagging fundamental as has been suggest-
ed (4). We have assigned the 1418 cm- 1 band to splitting of
the 1441 cm- 1 CH2 bending mode.

agonal with one molecule per unit cell (6). Less is known a-
bout the phase found below 190C. The crystal structure has
been variously described as pseudo-hexagonal (6), monoclinic
(7), and triclinic (8) but has not been fully determined.
