On an individual company level, the financial loss could hurt the company. The

average cost of a cyber-attack is $1.67 million, including productivity and

operational costs. These losses also cause a negative customer experience,

along with other consequences. Hence to manage the results, there are

Question 2: What is Web Service Platform? Explain its elements in detail. (10

Marks)

Web 2.0 is different from Web 1.0. It is more than just retrieving information or

contributing contents to the website. Web 2.0 is more about making users

interactive, dynamic on the web platform, giving them a richer set of controls

for interaction and collaboration. Web 2.0 technologies are user-centered

providing collaborative, interactive and communicative infrastructures and

services for the creation and consumption of content. These technologies

change the way the users select and organise available information. In

particular information is not created and classified only by experts or creators

but also by the users. Libraries are already moving into Web 2.0. Thus it would

be interesting to find Web 2.0 applications in the library

Blog-based
Libraries are using blogs to share information; encourage user feedback;

highlight information services; alert users about arrival of new resources or

setting up new facilities; etc. When applied with thought, blogs can be turned

into effective marketing tools minimising the distance between the users and

library. We can easily seek opinions and get input from users and make them

participative and collaborate for improving the user-centered service aspect of

libraries.

RSS-based

Libraries are using RSS feeds to keep up-to-date with blogs, world and local

news, photos, podcasts, weather forecasts, product price changes and sales,

new publications from favourite authors or publishers, social bookmarks,

professional association news, etc. There are hundreds of electronic journals

with RSS feeds alerting users whenever anything new is posted or published.

RSS updates particularly news about the world of writing such as latest books

being published relating to the interests of our patrons.

Wiki-based

Wikis are robust, open-ended, collaborative group sites permitting

asynchronous communication (not real time communication) and group

collaboration across the Internet. They can be viewed as a composition system,

a discussion medium, a repository, a mail system and a tool for collaboration.

They provide users with both author and editor privileges. Educational

institutions are hosting wikis of learning resources for more interactive learning

content and library can chip in this endeavour by linking it with content

available in the library as well as Internet. This may help attract more potential

users to the library’s resource base.
