About This Manual
Purpose The information in this manual is intended for Motorola customer engineers
or for customers who wish to install their own Dispatch Application Processor
(DAP) systems. This manual provides information necessary to operate,
maintain, and repair an iDEN DAP.
The iDEN Solutions Support Center (iSSC) is an integral part of the network
support process.

Ground the To minimize shock hazard, the equipment chassis and enclosure must be

plugged into an approved three-contact electrical outlet or used with a three-

Electro-Static Motorola strongly recommends that you use an anti-static wrist strap and a
Discharge conductive foam pad when installing or upgrading the system. Electronic
components, such as disk drives, computer boards, and memory modules, can
be extremely sensitive to Electro-Static Discharge (ESD). After removing the
component from the system or its protective wrapper, place the component
flat on a grounded, static-free surface, and in the case of a board, component-
side up. Do not slide the component over any surface.
If an ESD station is not available, always wear an anti-static wrist strap that is
attached to an unpainted metal part of the system chassis. This will greatly
reduce the potential for ESD damage.

The Environmental Friendly Use Period (EFUP) is the period (in years)

Electronic Information Product (EIP) will not leak or mutate causing environ-
mental pollution or bodily injury from the use of the EIP. The EFUP indicated
by the Logo 2 label applies to a product and all its parts. Certain field-
replaceable parts, such as battery modules, can have a different EFUP and are
marked separately.

Customer- For general guidelines and detailed instructions for replacing Customer-
Replaceable Units Replaceable Units (CRUs) in the Melody DAP, refer to the “Melody Core
(CRUs) Solution Hardware Reference Manual”.
LMT Description The LMT is a user interface into the DAP. The LMT is now provided as a
web-based maintenance terminal interface, which is accessed using a
common web browser such as Firefox or Netscape.
The DAP LMT user interface allows users access to view system information
(e.g. load shedding information, link states, system uptime and hardware
status) and to perform maintenance operations and troubleshooting.
The DAP implements the personalized LMT user accounts. An LMT Admin-
istrator is able to add and remove personalized LMT customer user accounts.
Access Privileges The LMT is used for maintenance operations and “real-time” troubleshooting
for User Groups of the DAP. It is crucial to provide appropriate operation menus or commands
to diagnose the problems and to display appropriate information for different
access levels of users. There are five levels of access. All five levels of access
are required to be password protected.
Viewer Level
Viewer level has the permissions to view the results of the authorized LMT
commands, which do not affect end-user services or network element config-
uration. This level of access is targeted for the MSO technician’s use. The
LMT will be able to support up to 250 Viewer level users.
Technician Level
Technician level has all of the Viewer's capabilities plus the authorized LMT
commands, which may affect end-user services or network element configu-
ration. This level of access is targeted for the MSO senior technician’s use.
The LMT will be able to support up to 250 Technician level users.
Engineer Level
Engineer level has all of the Viewer and the Technician's capabilities plus the
authorized LMT commands, which may or may not affect end-user services
or network element configuration. This access level is targeted for service
provider support teams and/or CNRC engineers. The LMT will be able to
support up to 100 Engineer level users.
Developer level can only be created by the Administrator and is for Motorola-
access use only. The LMT will be able to support up to 100 Developer level
users.
Administrator level only has the ability to maintain LMT accounts and
passwords and to manage user login sessions and activity logs. This is similar
to the administrator capabilities implemented in the HA-iHLR. The LMT will
be able to support up to 15 LMT Administrator level users.
LMT users are described as “users” throughout this manual. A user refers
to an LMT user that has been authorized to perform certain maintenance
operations.
This document provides screen shots at the “Engineer” access level since
this would cover most users. Administrator screens and other user access
levels are provided when noted.
User Access Four levels of user group access are addressed in this manual. There is a table
Privileges in each of the procedures that provides the user group access privileges for
that specific task or procedure.
The DAP supports four password-protected levels of LMT access. The four
different levels ensure that the appropriate commands and information are
available only to the appropriate authorized personnel.
The Developer user group is a Motorola-only access privilege and not
shown in the procedures of this manual.
The screen-shots displayed throughout this manual represent an “Engineer”
view unless otherwise specified.
LMT Sessions
LMT Sessions 1
An LMT session maintains information about a single user that is logged into
the LMT. The LMT requires a method of distinguishing between the various
requests it receives and matching them to the users that are logged in. This is
done via a unique session for each user.
Number of Sessions Each user is limited to a single session. Initially when the user logs in, a
per User session will be created. When the user logs out or times out, his/her session
will be terminated and destroyed. However, if during the time they are logged
in they try to start another browser and log in with the same account, they will
receive a message telling them the account is already in use and be denied the
login.
If a user is logged in and they hit “Ctrl+N” or “Alt+N” to start a new browser,
the old cookie still exists to the browser. When the user goes to the login page
in the new browser, they will be forced to the main menu because they are
logged in.
Also, if a second login is attempted then the user will be forced to the main
menu with the existing user information.
Session Operations Once an operation has been started during a session, the HA-DAP must
complete the first operation before a user can perform a subsequent operation.
This will ensure that the first operation is fully completed and that any subse-
quent operations will be performed.
LMT Sessions
Logging Out of the When a user is done using the LMT, they must click the logout link at the
LMT bottom of the screen. This has the effect of terminating and removing the
session.
Important If the user instead closes the browser (and does not log out), their session
still exists. They must then wait for their session to time out, or be reset
by the LMT Administrator.
If the user reaches the login screen via the back arrow (text-based LMT) or
back button (web-based LMT), their session still exists. The user should
either use the forward button/arrow to return to the main menu or select the
logout option, thus allowing the user to login again and re-enter the menu
system.
Killing a Session Killing a session is performed through the LMT Session Management menu.
After choosing that menu option, choose View All Sessions. This will bring up
a list of active sessions. You can click any one of the sessions to terminate that
specific session.
Terminating a session does not terminate the users’ current activity if they are
performing one (such as a backup). Instead, their next request will be rejected
and they will be forced back to the login screen.
The user will not see the result from the operation they were performing if
their session is terminated.
LMT Remote The remote access to the DAP LMT is primarily through the Ethernet
Accessibility interface. Currently, this access is done via the OMC-R using ssh to access the
NE and then accessing its LMT.
The backup access is through the direct dial-up to the NE console port or
through a terminal server accessing the NE console port. This built in redun-
dancy will allow access, even if the LMT Ethernet connectivity is down. It is
the customer's responsibility to provide the remote access for the field teams
to troubleshoot any reported problem.
Valid Account There are four pieces of information relevant to account creation. Of these,
Parameters only three are required.
Login Name (required): The login name is a unique name, 4-8 characters
long which represents the user. The login name must start with a character
(A-Z or a-z) and further contain only letters and numbers.
Password (required): The password is a key known only to the account
holder that allows that user to login. A valid password is 9 to 20 ASCII
printable characters. ASCII printable characters are defined to be all those
between ! and ~ (see Password Criteria on page 1-9). The following are all
valid characters.

Group (required): The group describes what actions this user will have
access to on the LMT. Possible groups are: Viewer, Technician, Engineer,
Administrator. Therefore, belonging to one of these groups allows a user
access to those same actions.
Real Name (optional): This is an optional field which can be used to
specify the real name of the user. It must be no longer than 30 characters in
length. There are no requirements on the contents.
Password Expiration Passwords do not expire. There is no time limit on the length of time a user
can use the same password.
Changing a A user may change their password by first logging in, then choosing the User
Password Management main menu item to use the “Change Password” option.
Password Criteria The following criteria are for a valid user login and password:
Login (User Name)
Four to eight characters
First character must be a letter (A-Z), (a-z)
The rest can be alphanumeric
Passwords must have following characteristics:
Must contain 9 to 20 characters
May not begin with a numeral (0 - 9)
Must contain, at least two upper case letters (A - Z)
Must contain, at least two lower case letters (a-z)
Must contain, at least two Numerals (0 - 9)
Must contain, at least two special characters (non alpha-numeric)
A special character (any character in Figure 1-1 on page 1-7 other
than a letter or digit
Procedure Once an account is obtained, then the user can login to the LMT using a Web
browser such as Netscape or Firefox.
Important Due to known compatibility issues with Netscape 6, a user should utilize
Internet Explorer, Netscape 4.X, or Netscape 7 or higher when using the
LMT.
Note There can be several reasons why a login may fail. If a login fails the
screen will return to the login screen with an error message describing
the cause. Attempt to remedy the cause and repeat the login procedure.
Note Figure 1-2 on page 1-10 shows the default security banner message.
The message can be customized by following the steps described in
the SR18.0 SCP DAP Upgrade Installation Method of Procedure
(mopdap03621).
Logging Out of the When done using the LMT, users must click the logout link at the bottom of

Launching the Text The text interface can be launched by using ssh or equivalent to login to the
Interface machine as the user “lmt”. A text-mode web browser (Lynx) will be launched
on the DAP to provide the text interface.
Important The LMT Text Interface should be used only when connected via the
Nodal IP. Using the Console via the Management Port (MP) could result
in latency which would interfere with the usability of the LMT.
The user will then be presented with a login screen similar to the graphical
version. All the same logins work on the text interface as with the graphical
version.
Note The user should use the following ssh command in the text interface
to enter a secure session:
The user should answer yes to login. This message will appear the first
time they log in to a particular DAP.
LMT Login/ The LMT UNIX login password may be changed by the Administrator from

What is Lynx? Lynx is a text-based web browser. It supports a basic set of HTML elements.
Since the LMT is HTML-based, Lynx was chosen as a text mode browser to
provide an interface into the LMT which could be used over ssh or a local
console.
Using Lynx Navigation is accomplished through a few basic keys. To navigate in Lynx,
use the tab or down arrow keys to move to the next link or field. Use the up
arrow key to move to the previous link or field. To activate a link, press the
enter key or use the right arrow key. To go to the previous page (back), use the
left arrow key. Hitting the spacebar will display the next page of information
if available.
Note If the refresh link at the top of the login screen is highlighted, and you
need to position the cursor at the Login field, use either the Tab or
down arrow keys.
Logging Out of Lynx The following steps are used for logging out of Lynx:
Accessing the ELMT Anyone who has access to the machine itself, able to access ssh or equivalent,
and has appropriate privileges will have access to the ELMT.
Launching ELMT The ELMT can be launched by using ssh to login to the machine as the user
elmt.
Note The user should use the following command to enter a secure session.
The user should answer yes to login. This message will appear the first
time they log in to a particular DAP.
ELMT Logins/ The ELMT password may be changed from the menu by the LMT Adminis-

Important It is very important to delete the files on a weekly basis. Leaving the files
on the DAP would result in the DAP drive becoming full, therefore, new
billing files cannot be created.

data in the replication log but the databases are out-of-sync.

This feature allows the user to query subscriber units stored in the D-VLR
during troubleshooting activities. This query tool provides the ability to enter
a subscriber IMSI and then display its provisioning and registration param-
eters stored in the D-VLR. Data includes several different parameters
including: SCCH, Packet Data Service, and Dispatch Service provisioning.
Access to this menu is allowed only while the DAP is in the “UP” state.
When the DAP is in Load Shedding level 1 or 2, access to this menu is not
allowed.
Inactivity of 5 minutes will cause the login to time-out.

Interpreting Health Check Results 11
The health check is divided into two areas, monitor and check. Items in the
monitor category do not indicate a failure; they simply show a measurement
or status.
Check Items Verifies that there are no core files on the DAP partition.
Verifies all critical DAP processes are running.
Checks the status of DAP to HLR links.
Checks status of the message queues for all DAP processes.
Checks status of DAP-to-DAP links.
Checks status of DAP-to-iSG links.
Checks status of DAP-to-iHLR links.
Checks status of DAP-to-MDG links.
Checks status of DAP-to-iVPU links.
Checks status of DAP-to-ACG links.
Verifies that the server hardware is functioning normally.
Header Items Additional information is supplied in the header of the health check display.
Health Checks
CPU Utilization The health check reports CPU utilization for reference only. The percentages
(Monitor) reported do not indicate whether or not a failure has occurred. Since utili-
zation is only recorded every 5 seconds and is the utilization at that instant,
this number can be misleading as to the actual CPU utilization as a whole. The
CPU utilization may be very high after starting the DAP. If CPU utilization is
very high, it should be monitored to see if it drops. It should drop or begin to
drop within two hours. If it does not begin to drop after two hours, contact the
CNRC. Also during periods of high traffic the CPU utilization can become
quite high (this may be normal). Therefore if all other checks pass, wait until
after the busy hour then run a health check again to see if CPU utilization has
dropped.
Note The health check runs on the processor at a low priority. The health
check will only use the CPU if other higher priority processes are not
using it. This is why it may take longer to run the health check during
peak operational hours. The CPU utilization percentage reported for
the processor is a normalized value.
Billing & DAP Disk This monitor shows the current disk usage for both the billing directory and
Partition Usage the DAP disk partitions. If either directory’s usage is greater than 85 percent
(Monitor or Fail) full, the MSO personnel should clean up the directory by removing outdated
billing and configuration files. The DAP LMT options provide file deletion
for the Billing and Configuration files. If either directory is 98 percent full,
health check will display FAIL in place of the percentage amount.
Refer to the Delete OMC Configuration Files on page 11-5 and Delete Billing
Record Files on page 3-13 procedures for more details.
DAP Processes This test confirms whether or not the DAP processes that are expected to be
(Pass/Fail) running are indeed running. It does not confirm whether or not a process is
hung. Most processes are monitored internally and if a process is hung, it is
reported to the OMC. This test also determines if there are duplicates of
certain processes running. If all expected DAP processes are running and
there are no duplicate DAP processes, a status of OK is reported. Otherwise, a
FAIL is reported. If the health check fails the check for DAP processes,
contact the CNRC. The CNRC will determine the best course of action to
correct any DAP process.
Health Checks
Core Files (Pass/ This test determines if core file(s) exist on the DAP disk partition. The health

system.
Queue Status (Pass/ This test checks the input queues for all DAP processes. If the queue is less

10% full. The DAP is still processing messages.
DAP-ACG links This test checks the status of the DAP to ACG links used for Dispatch Call
(Pass/Fail) Control. If a configured link to an ACG is not active, then the Health Check
will indicate a failure. If there is a failure, the detailed health check log will
contain the logical identifier of each ACG to which a link was expected but
not found.
DAP-to-DAP Links This test checks the status of the DAP-to-DAP links used in horizontal
(Pass/Fail) networking. If a configured link to a peer DAP is not active, then the Health
Check will indicate a failure.
DAP-iHLR links This test checks the status of the DAP to iHLR links used for Subscriber
(Pass/Fail) Mobility Management. If a configured link to an iHLR is not active, then the
Health Check will indicate a failure. If there is a failure, the detailed health
check log will contain the IP address of each iHLR to which a link was
expected but not found.
DAP-to-iVPU Links This test checks the status of the DAP-to-iDEN Vocoder Processing Unit
(Pass/Fail) (iVPU) links used for dispatch audio routing control. If a configured LAN
connection to a DAP is not active, then the health check will indicate a failure.
DAP-to-iSG Links This test checks the status of the DAP-to-iDEN Surveillance Gateway (iSG)
(Pass/Fail) links used for the dispatch surveillance function. If a configured 100BaseT
Ethernet interface connection to a DAP is not active, then the health check
will indicate a failure.
Health Checks
DAP-MDG links This test checks the status of the DAP to MDG links used for Packet Data Call
(Pass/Fail) Control. If a configured link to an MDG is not active, then the Health Check
will indicate a failure. If there is a failure, the detailed health check log will
contain the logical identifier of each MDG to which a link was expected but
not found.
DAP Version Check This monitor reports the version of the DAP software installed.

Hardware Status This test uses system tools to determine if any hardware on the server is in an
(Pass/Fail) abnormal state. If the health check determines that any hardware devices are
in an abnormal state, FAIL will be displayed.
Modestate of Host This monitor reports the modestate of the DAP at the time the Health Check
Node (Monitor) was run.
Modestate of Peer This monitor reports the modestate of the peer at the time the Health Check
Node (Monitor) was run.

Starting the HA DAP / Melody DAP application will include the starting of
the CCP layer and the DAP tasks.
A reason is required to start the DAP application.
When the user attempts to start the HA DAP / Melody DAP application a
warning message will be displayed to the user to confirm the action.
Note After starting the HA DAP / Melody DAP application from the LMT,
the current mode state displayed on the LMT will refresh only after
user activity is performed. User activity such as clicking on any menu
item or link will refresh the mode state on the screen.

An account inactivity timer is associated with each LMT account, except the
default account “admin”. When this timer is enabled, the LMT will deny all
login requests sent by a user that has not authenticated within the period of the
timer duration. When authentication fails for this reason, the LMT displays a
message to the user indicating that the login request is denied because the
account has been inactivated due to lack of use and advising the user to
contact an administrator. See Reactivate Inactive LMT Users on page 13-14.
The account inactivity timer is enabled by default and can be disabled and
enabled by a user in the Administrator group. When the account inactivity
timer is disabled no user login requests will be denied due to inactivity. This
setting applies to all user accounts and cannot be enabled or disabled for
individual LMT accounts. This setting is replicated to the mate node and is
persistent across application restarts, host restarts and software upgrades.
See Enable or Disable Account Inactivity Timer on page 13-10.
The duration of the account inactivity timer is 90 days by default and can be
changed by a user in the Administrator group, to a value between 1 and 180
days, inclusive. This setting is replicated to the mate node and is persistent
across application restarts, host restarts and software upgrades.

Enable or Disable The HA DAP / Melody DAP LMT administrator is authorized to enable and
