During the last 20 years the distribution of income in Colombia has deteriorated
considerably. This phenomenon has been widely studied in the national aggregate,
however, the same does not happen with regional differences in inequality. To date,
the reasons why the richest departments and cities, among which the capital of the
Republic stands out, tend to be among the least equitable have not been discussed.
This study explores the determinants of regional differences in the distribution of
household income in the 23 main cities of Colombia. The objective is to clarify the
factors by which the growth of the economy has been compatible with substantial
increases in income inequality in a good number of cities. The strategy followed
consists of modeling what the income distribution of urban inhabitants in Colombia
would be like if the 23 cities considered shared some of the characteristics of
Bogotá. For this, parametric micro-decomposition methods are used. What is found
is that the return structure and its interaction with education and the number of
children, as well as non-labor income, stand out among the factors whose effects
are regressive, that is, they worsen income distribution. For its part, the most
progressive factor in the capital is its occupational structure.
