Lab # 2- Osmosis

Title: Osmosis

Aim: To demonstrate osmosis using samples of eggplants.

Materials/Apparatus:

 Petri dishes
 Knife
 Eggplant
 Distilled water
 Salt solution
 25mL Beakers
 Electronic Balance
 Stop watch

Method/Procedures:

 Cut 3 pieces of eggplant sample into strips of suitable dimensions.

 Weigh the samples.
 Record the dimensions and the mass of each sample in a suitable table.
 Place one of the strips into a petri dish filled with distilled water, place another strip into
a petri dish of salt solution and place the third piece into an empty petri dish.
 Label the petri dishes A, B and C respectively and leave them at rest for one hour.
 After the one hour, remove the strips from the solutions.
 Re-measure the dimensions and the weights of the samples and record the results in a
suitable table.

SALT SOLUTION AND THE OTHER IN AN EMPTY PETRI DISH.
Lab # 2- Osmosis

Observation: Use the exact table I uploaded in the other document with your osmosis results.
TABLE SHOWING THE DIMENSIONS AND THE MASS OF THE STRIPS BEFORE AND
AFTER THE EXPERIMENT

NB. Dimensions include the length, the width and the thickness of the strips.

Discussion:

1. What is osmosis?
2. State the particle theory of matter.
3. Identify the semi-permeable membrane
4. Account for the changes in the measurements for the three strips in relations to the movement of
particles.
5. Include sources of errors, precautions and limitations.

Conclusion: Relate to the aim.
