Narrative Report on Virtual Campus Journalism Workshop in the New Normal

Campus journalism serves as an important platform for the pupils because it gives them a
voice. They can talk about issues that are essential with the school and their lives as well.
Aside from the benefits that it provides for the pupils, campus journalism can become a
training ground for them if ever they try pursuing a career in the journalism world. Also,
being in campus journalism helps pupils practice their freedom of expression.
Mangino Elementary School believes that practice makes progress, and to be able to become
an excellent journalist, pupils should undergo different kinds of training and workshops to
hone their skills in writing. Resulting to that, the school had come up with a wonderful idea
of conducting training and workshops online. Since the pandemic has caused a major halt in
the education sector, putting off the possibility of face-to-face training, the school's
journalism team pursued the campus journalism online workshop seeking to bring out the
best potential among each young journalist in Mangino Elementary School.
The two-day online campus journalism workshop was held from June 25-26, 2021 and it was
supervised by the school's encouraging and full of vigor school head, Ma'am Julita J. Aguilar.
Day 1 started with the conduct of the opening program which included the nationalistic song,
prayer, and the DepEd Gapan Hymn. Ma'am Julita J. Aguilar preceded the seminar by
motivating and challenging the young journalists into giving their best in what they do. That
despite the pandemic, they'll continue to be more studious and to believe in their capabilities.
She also reiterated the importance of campus journalism in every school.
The online workshop proceeded with Ma'am Alpha T. De Guzman stating the Rationale, and
Ma'am Ma. Elaine Christine S. Paguio, introducing the speakers for the day. Ma'am
Bernadeth P. Magat led the first discussion by citing the do's and don'ts when writing a
feature article. She discussed that feature writing will often cover an issue in greater depth
than a news story would do, or it might look at an ongoing story from a different angle. She
introduced the different types of Feature Writing and even gave a variety of sample articles
that helped the school campus journalists understood the topic even more.
The 2nd speaker of the day is the best in his craft, and an excellent teacher from San
Fernando Elementary School, Sir Rogelio Dela Cruz. He tackled the world of News Writing.
Being one of the experienced teachers in the field of journalism, it was a privilege to have
had Sir Rogelio Dela Cruz discussed important details about News Writing in the online
workshop.
