SELECTION TOOLS IN DIGITAL DRAWING

Adobe Photoshop also offers a number of selection tools: Rectangular marquee, Elliptical marquee, Lasso,
Polygonal Lasso, Magnetic Lasso, Magic Wand.
This classification of tool palette helps the illustrator to select and crop any part of the image. Each of the selection
tools such as marquee tool, magic wand, lasso tool, eyedropper tool and crop tool have hidden tool under them.
1. MOVE TOOL
This tool is used to select and move objects on the canvass. The shortcut key for Move Tool is “v”. Just press
the letter v on the keyboard and this will select the move tool. The move tool helps in positioning selected content or layers
when customizing your work.
 Select the Move tool (V)  .
 Use the Options bar to customize tool settings, like Alignment and Distribution, to get the effect you want.
 Click on an element—like a layer, selection or artboard—to move it.

2. MARQUEE TOOLS
The most basic of selection and often the one most useful. This tool is used to draw
selections based on geometric shapes. The marque tool allows you to draw rectangular
and elliptical selections. There are different marquee tools: rectangular marquee,
elliptical marquee, single row marquee, and single column marquee. Use the shortcut

3. LASSO TOOLS
The lasso tool is useful for drawing segments of a selection
border. This is used for selections where there is no pre-
defined shape. Unlike the marquee tool where you can select
areas using circles and rectangles, the lasso tool gives you
more freedom in the shapes you select by drawing a freehand
around it.
This tool consists of: Lasso Tool, Polygonal Lasso Tool,
Magnetic Lasso Tool.
To select lasso tool use shortcut key “L” on your keyboard.

b. Polygonal Lasso Tool
This tool allows you to click points around your picture to
create your selection. You can select an object by drawing a
straight-edge border around it. Just click and hold on to the
lasso tool in the toolbar to select the polygonal lasso. Move the
pointer onto the image and click to place the first anchor point.
After placing the first point, notice that a straight line extends
between the anchor point and the mouse pointer. This line
indicates the selection line that will be created to place another
anchor point. To define an enclosed area, you can close the
selection shape by clicking back on the starting anchor point.
When you do this, the selection process is complete.

c. Magnetic Lasso Tool

This tool allows you to select an object by tracing its outline.
This tool is useful for quickly selecting objects with complex
edges set against high contrast backgrounds. To erase your
recently drawn segments and fastening points, press delete key
until you erased the fastening points for the desired segment.
To close the border with a magnetic segment, double click or
press enter.

4. Quick Selection Tool

This tool is like the "Magic Wand Tool" except you will
be able to keep clicking on areas to have it selected instead of
having to hold down the "Shift" key, but you will have to hold
down the "Alt" key if you want to subtract areas that were
selected. You also will be able to select different areas of the
image.
You can choose to include or remove certain areas using
the add to selection and subtract a selection options in the tool
options, respectively. You can use the quick selection tool to
quickly paint a selection using an adjustable round brush tip.
As you drag the selection, it expands outward and
automatically finds and follows defined edges in the image. It
makes the selections quick and easy.

-To finish the selection, you have to click on the starting point.
-The “Magnetic Lasso” will have a small circle next to it when you
are back to the starting point.
