3. In the figure, ABC is a triangle with side (5x – 3y + 3) cm,
(5x – y – 1) cm and (3x + 4y – 1) cm.
(a) Express the perimeter of △ABC in terms of x and/or y. (5x – 3y + 3) cm (3x + 4y – 1) cm

Expand and simplify the following expressions, and arrange the terms in descending powers of the variables.
9. 3(5 x + 1) + 2(3 − 4 x) 10. 2[6x(3x – 2) + 5x]
3(5 x + 1) + 2(3 − 4 x) 2[6 x(3 x − 2) + 5 x]
= 15x + 3 + 6 − 8 x = 2(18x 2 − 12 x + 5 x)
= 15x − 8 x + 3 + 6 = 2(18x 2 − 7 x)
= 7x + 9
= 36 x 2 − 14 x
13. In the figure, ABCD is a rectangle and BC = (4x + 5) cm. AB is shorter than BC A D
by (2x + 2) cm.
(a) Find the length of AB in terms of x.
(b) Express the area of the rectangle in terms of x.
B C
(4x + 5) cm
(a) AB = [(4 x + 5) − (2 x + 2)] cm (b) Area of the rectangle
= (4 x + 5 − 2 x − 2) cm = (4 x + 5)(2 x + 3) cm 2
= (2 x + 3) cm
= [(4 x + 5)(2 x) + (4 x + 5)(3)] cm 2
= (8 x 2 + 10 x + 12 x + 15) cm 2
= (8 x 2 + 22 x + 15) cm 2

14. A number is 4 less than the sum of its two-third, its one-fifth and its two-ninth. Find the number.
Let x be the number
2 1 2
(3 𝑥 + 5 𝑥 + 9 𝑥) − 𝑥 = 4
30𝑥+9𝑥+10𝑥−45𝑥

x=4× 4
∴ x = 45 Ans: The number is 45
15. A man buys roses at $ 90 a dozen, and five times as many at $ 120 a score; he sells the whole of them
at $ 7 each, and makes a profit of $ 54. How many roses did he buy altogether ?
Let x be the no. of first kind and 5x be the no. of 2nd kind of roses
90 120
(𝑥) + (5𝑥) + 54 = 7(𝑥 + 5𝑥)
12 20
7.5x + 30x + 54 = 42x
4.5x = 54
x = 12

16. A boy has 80 coints, some of them $ 1 coins and the rest $ 2 coins; if he exchanged each $1 coin for a $ 5 coins
and each $ 2 coin for a 50¢ coins he would lose $ 10 . How many $1 coins has he ?
Let x be the no. of $ 1 coins and (80 − x) be the no. of $ 2 coins
17. If the acute angles of a right-anlged triangle are (3x+6)° and 4x°, find the angles.
(3x+6)° + 4x° = 90°
7 x = 84°
x = 12°

In each of the following identities, A,B and C are constants. Find the values of A, B and C.
21. 2(Ax – 5) – 4(x – 4) 12x – B 22. Ax 2 + B + 1 3x( x + 1) − Cx
L.H.S. = 2( Ax − 5) − 4( x − 4) R.H.S. = 3 x( x + 1) − Cx
= 2 Ax − 10 − 4 x + 16
= 3 x 2 + 3 x − Cx
= (2 A − 4) x + 6
= 3 x 2 + (3 − C ) x
∴ (2 A − 4) x + 6 12 x − B
By comparing the like terms, we have ∴ Ax 2 + B + 1 3x 2 + (3 − C ) x
2 A − 4 = 12 By comparing the like terms, we have
