Choose one kind of food product containing a coloring flavoring. Discuss:
- Information of food product
- Information of coloring agent: Type, E-number, characteristics, functionality
- Amount of food additive in the product

1.1 Food product information:

- Brand: ORION
- Made in Vietnam
- Weight: 30g
- Expiry date: 7 months
- Ingredients: Fresh Potatoes, Vegetable Oil, Spice Powder, Rosemary Extract
- Instructions for use Eat directly, use immediately after opening the package. The
product is exposed to the air for a long time, it will affect the brittleness
- Storage: Cool, dry place, away from sunlight and high temperature.

Note: The product contains dairy, wheat, and soy ingredients in the seasoning powder
and may contain fish, shrimp, squid, egg, mustard because it is produced on the same
line as other snack products.

Ingredients: Potato, Vegetable oil, New York steak seasoning (Sugar, Maltodextrin,
Flavor Enhancer: Monododium L-Glutamate (E621), Salt, Soy sauce powder,
Onion powder, Tomato powder, Garlic powder, Rosemary extract.
Most of the ingredients are flavoring agents.

1.2 Information about Food Flavorings


In brief, synthetic flavorings were added due to the process to enhance the flavor of
snack, which consists of:
- Vegetable oil
- New York steak seasoning (Sugar, Maltodextrin, Flavor Enhancer: Monododium L-
Glutamate (E621),
- Salt
- Soy sauce powder
- Onion powder
- Tomato powder
- Garlic powder
- Rosemary extract.

1.3 Advantages and Disadvantages

a. Advantages
The use of food flavorings in snack will propose a tasty profile for food. Which enhances
the attraction of customers and can be seen as a great combination when drinking with
coke. Moreover, adding flavors can help alleviating the bland texture, since the powder
also maintains their own natural color, that would simultaneously increase the flavor and
color of food. Using flavors can be added when the flavors are lost during processing.
For some, such as salt and sugar, apart from promoting the appetite, these components
are also vital in prolonging the shelf-life by acting preservatives.

b. Disadvantages
There are several disadvantages regarding adding flavors, as MSG can cause migrian,
allergic reactions and food hypersensitivity, worsening of asthmatic symptom, creating
abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Some allergic to milk or soy sauce products will
find this snack sickening.

To sum up, food flavorings are double-edged swords that can be beneficial and harmful.
Using food-flavorings, manufacturers must announce the pre-cautions for consumer to
avoid potential health risks, and to maximize the nutritional profile.
