Contemporary art has a broad scope. It refers to over 100 art styles and
movements which flourished from 1945 up to the present time. At the present time,
art became more different from the traditional art where they follow a certain structure
or style. Contemporary artists explore new styles and perspectives in producing art.
Through time, they have experimented on various techniques of expressing their
emotions, perceptions, ideas and other things which can be expressed through art.
The famous ones are abstract expressionism, performance art, body art, graffiti and
those which were brought by technology like video and digital art. Unlike before,
contemporary art is not only contained in paintings and drawings illustrated in a paper
or canvass.
In this module, you will discover the different contemporary art forms which
makes it unique and different from the traditional art.

Furthermore, contemporary art may not be permanently displayed in a specific area.
Some of them are meant to be displayed only in a specific span of time and later on
be replaced by another one unlike traditional art which are preserved in museums.

Since we are in the technology age, it may also be accessed through the
internet like the drawings, fan arts or portraits of celebrities being posted in social
media.

Contemporary artists are not confined in using only brushes and paints. They
possess flexibility and freedom to combine and use materials which they found. Many
of them are self-taught and did not attend for formal education. This was made
possible because technology can help them access websites which provide tutorials
on how to produce art. In addition, most of their artworks express their statement or
reactions on certain issues in our society, environment and their reflections of reality.
They are free to choose their subjects which makes sometimes make it difficult for
some to decode their message.

Through the years, the following contemporary art movements and styles were
formulated (Ramirez, 2016):

Discussion of Activity 1
Contemporary art are not confined in museums. They can be found in public
places like walls of streets, roads and even in theatre. Contemporary artists do not
limit themselves in using traditional materials. They apply creativity in producing art
even with the simple objects they find. They can use a human body as canvass and
even the natural substances found in the environment. Aside from that, technology
can also be used by contemporary artists in producing art. Being a contemporary artist
depends on one’s willingness to develop his knowledge, skills and talents. Some
contemporary artists did not have formal education; however, their willingness and
passion became a big factor in developing the artists within them.
