INTRODUCTION, AUXILIARY MECHANICAL
PACKAGE, AND DESIGN FEATURES
Gas Turbine

A gas turbine is a rotary machine, similar in principle to a steam turbine. It consists

of three main components-a compressor, a combustion chamber and a turbine. As
shown in Fig (1-1) the air after being compressed into the compressor is heated either
by directly burning fuel in it or by burning fuel externally in a heat exchanger. The
heated air with or without products of combustion is expanded in a turbine resulting
in work output, a substantial part, about two-thirds, of which is used to drive the
compressor. Rest, about one-third, is available as useful work output.

Starting Package

The starting system is a self-contained bedplate mounted assembly consisting of a

electric motor that is connected to a torque converter, a step up gear, turning gear, am
an overriding mechanical disconnect clutch. This assembly provides the breakaway
torque for initial rotation, the torque necessary for acceleration to ignition and self-
sustaining speeds, and the disconnect means to allow the starting shaft to come to rest
when the unit is operating at self-sustaining speed and above. In addition, the turning
gear provides the slow roll of the shafting during cooldown periods to prevent rotor
bowing.

Generator Exciter Package

The main frames of the generator and exciter are mounted on a common bed plate
complete with integral lube oil piping and necessary instrumentation and associated
conduit. The generator is directly connected to the gas turbine through a solid
coupling. The generator design is open air-cooled and employs the use of shaft-
mounted axial blowers to draw filtered air for circulation through the generator
assembly. Filtered air is drawn from the main air inlet and is directed toward entry
points on each side of the main frame. Air is discharged vertically from the top of the
generator through an acoustic limiting muffler system. The brushless exciter with
permanent magnet generator is directly connected to the generator and is also air
cooled.
Inlet Air System

This system takes ambient air and directs it to the compressor inlet. The system
includes a silencer to attenuate air borne noise emitted from the compressor. It also
includes a self-cleaning pulse-type inlet air filter which is mounted over the generator.

Gas Turbine Package

The gas turbine package consists of a compressor-turbine assembly from the flanges
of the inlet air manifold to the exhaust expansion joint. Associated equipment such as
fuel assemblies and supervisory instrumention is included.
Enclosure

The pre-fabricated enclosure for the gas turbine contains the necessary ventilation
equipment required to maintain the unit in a standby or operational status. As the
enclosure does not contain aisle space, inspection doors and removable side and roof
panels are provided for machine maintenance.

Gas Turbine Longitudinal

General Description

The Gas Turbine is in many respects the simplest type of power apparatus available. It
is completely self-contained requiring no boiler or other external heat source. It
utilizes the heat from burning fuel by converting it into mechanical power within a
single assembly.

The Siemens and Westinghouse Gas Turbine consists of a 17 stage high efficiency
axial compressor, combustion chamber equipped with 16 combustors arranged in
circular array around the machine axis, and a 4 stage reaction type turbine. The Gas
Turbine is directly coupled to and drives a generator. Atmospheric air is drawn
through the vertical entry inlet manifold and inlet casing into the compressor where it
is pressurized to approximately 10 atmospheres and forced into the combustor
chamber and combustors in a steady flow. Fuel delivered into the combustors burns,
raising the temperature of the mixture of air and combustion products. The
compressed and heated mixture (gas) then flows through the turbine, dropping in
pressure and temperature as the heat energy is absorbed and converted into
mechanical work of rotation. A portion of the power thus developed by the turbine is
used for driving the compressor, and the balance of power is used to drive the
generator. The gas is then exhausted through the exhaust diffuser and axial exhaust
manifold into the exhaust stack-silencer where its sound power level is reduced to a
predetermined level and the flow is discharged vertically to the atmosphere.

To assure good starting characteristics, interstage bleeds are fitted in the 6th and 11th
stages of the compressor. They are open during the starting cycle and remain open
through 90 percent speed. Correct alignment of the Gas Turbine to the generator is
maintained by the rigid compressor end pedestals and flexible turbine end supports.
The flexible turbine supports compensate for thermal variations.

Design Features

The Siemens and Westinghouse Gas Turbine incorporates many attractive design
features proven by successful field operation from the family of Siemens and
Westinghouse Gas Turbine models. These features include the following:

A two bearing rotor to overcome the alignment problem inherent in machines having
three or more bearings. Readily accessible bearings operating at below atmospheric
pressure, thus reducing shaft seals to an absolute minimum.

Individually keyed compressor blades can be removed and re-installed without

disturbing other blades or removing the rotor from casing.

4 Code: SEC-S0A-MHA Lesson 1

ISCOSA TRAINING CENTER
SIEMENS AND WESTINGHOUSE GT AUX-SYSTEM
Turbine blades can be replaced without disturbing other rows and with the rotor in
place. Compressor diaphragms, turbine diaphragms, thrust bering and journal bearings
can be taken out and replaced with the spindle in place. Turbine supports provide for
free expansion and contraction due to varying thermal conditions without disturbing
the shaft alignment. Cooling circuit for protecting the Gas Turbine parts from high
temperature gas steam and thus assuring their reliability and long life. Tangential strut
support system for the turbine end bearing, an exclusive Westinghouse patent, capable
of holding the bearing on centerline for all conditions of load and temperature.

Inlet Casing Section

Casing

The inlet casing is fabricated from carbon steel plates and castings. It acts as a smooth
boundary passage for the air flowing into the compressor, and provides a housing for
the thrust and journal bearings. While the lower half of the bearing housing is integral
with the inlet casing, the thrust bearing cover is not and can be removed to expose the
thrust bearing for inspection without disturbing any other portion of the inlet casing.
Both bearing bores are machined into the inlet casiw with close concentricity
tolerances, thus, no bearing adjustment is required. Thrusebearing shoes on both sides
of the shaft thrust ring as well as journal bearing pads are equipped with
thermocouples for monitoring bearing temperature by the turbine control system.

Air pressurized sealing structure, consisting of three brass seal rings, separates the
bearing oil environment from the compressor, thus protecting the compressor air flow
from oil contamination. Pressure differential across the oil seal ring nearest to the
bearing cavity can always be verified by utilizing the pressure taps specially provided
for this purpose.

Compressor and Combustor Section

The compressor cylinder, compressor combustor cylinder and combustor cylinder, are
all bolted together at their respective vertical joints. They form the outer casing of the
subject section. This casing provides a housing for the stationary diaphragms of the
seventeen stage compressor. It also incorporates the sixth and eleventh stage bleed air
manifolds and accommodates the combustion chamber. The compressor cylinder
basically is a carbon steel casing with an air manifold built up from carbon steel plates
round its sixth stage bleed holes. The cylinder rests on rigid pedestals which form the
compressor end support of the gas turbine.

Compressor Diaphragms

The compressor diaphragms consist of two piece (upper and lower) fabrications. The
air foil shaped vanes, made of chromium steel, are rolled and subsequently welded to
Lesson 1 Code: SEC-S0A-M11A 5
ISCOSATRAININGTRAININGCENTER
SIEMENS AND WESTINGHOUSE GT AUX-SYSTEM
the inner and outer shroud rings to form diaphragms. The diaphragms are then
machined to fit into grooves in the compressor cylinder cover and base. Each half of
the diaphragm is restrained from rotating by a retaining screw at the horizontal joint.
Leakage past each stationary row is minimized by seal strips welded to the inside
diameter wall of the inner shroud rings. Corresponding seal lands are machined on the
compressor discs. The stationary compressor diaphragms are removable with the rotor
in place so that all blading may be inspected without disturbing the rotating elements.

Combustor Chamber

Combustion of the fuel that supplies the energy for the turbine takes place in the 16
combustors arranged circumferentially around the machine axis. Each combustor
consists of a can-shaped combustor basket and basket extension called a transition
piece. They are both jointed together by means of a clamping device. They are
fabricated from cold rolled nickel base chromium alloy sheets, a material
characterized by its high stress qualities and great resistance to elevated temperature
effects. The basket - transition piece assembly is rigidly secured at its upstream and
downstream ends while in the middle it is restrained from radial growth by a
bracketing structure supported on -the compressor diffuser. The basket and transition
are allowed to expand axially at their clamping joint.

The combustor chamber, in which the combustors are enclosed, forms a relatively
low velocity plenum into which compressor discharge air flows. Fuel is forced into
the combustor baskets through a fuel nozzle located at the upstream end of each
basket. It mixes with the compressed air flowing in through the basket air holes. The
baskets are perforated and designed to induce turbulent mixing of the fuel and air. To
insure uniformity in performance, all fuel nozzles are calibrated before installation in
a machine. Spark plug igniters located in the bottom two baskets are used to ignite
the mixture. The remaining baskets are ignited through crossflame tubes that provide
connection between every two adjacent combustors except the top two which have no
connection between them. To prevent burning, the electrodes retract from the hot
flame area after ignition due to the differential pressure sustained on the ends of the
spark plugs. On shutdown, the spring returns the electrodes to the interior of the
combustor basket to ignite the fuel on the next startup. Four U.V. scanners, two at
each of the top two baskets, are employed to confirm ignition during startup. The hot
gas flows from the baskets through the transition pieces toward the turbine. At the
transition piece outlet compressor air flow is introduced to shape the radial
temperature profile of the hot gas to a desired form as the gas enters the first row of
the turbine stationary vanes.

Fuel Nozzles

Fuel is metered and introduced into the upstream end of each combustor basket by
means of a fuel nozzle. The fuel nozzles are readily accessible for each removal. The
6 Code: SEC-S0A-M11A Lesson 1

WESTINGHOUSE GT AUX-SYSTEM
liquid fuel injection system uses a single-orifice pressure-atomizing fuel nozzle which
contains no moving parts. Air-assist is used for starting when the oil fuel pressure at
the nozzle is very low. As the fuel pressure is increased, the fuel nozzle tip
mechanically atomizes the fuel oil such that no atomizing air is required. The gas fuel
nozzle consists of an annular flow passage from which the gaseous fuel is distributed
to accurately machined orifices arranged in a circular pattern about the nozzle
centerline, and subsequently injected into the combustor basket. The dual fuel nozzle
is composed of separate liquid and gas fuel nozzle sub-assemblies assembled together
to form one unit.

Torque Tube Seals

Filtered cooling air is supplied to the torque tube seal housing by means of two pipes
running through the combustion chamber. A part of it is utilized by the torque tube
sealing system which separates the compressor and turbine environments while the rest
is channeled to the turbine rotor and is employed to cool the rotating blade roots, disc
serrations and surrounding areas of the turbine rotor. The cooling air temperature at the
torque tube seals is continuously monitored by two thermocouples connected to the gas
turbine control system.

Turbine Cylinder Section

The turbine cylinder is fabricated from carbon steel plate, and provides a housing for
the 4 stages of the turbine stationary diaphragms also referred to as the blade ring
assemblies. Each blade ring assembly is composed of 16 vane segments and 16 ring
segments, all mounted in circumferential grooves of the blade ring. The ring segments
serve as liners for the rotating blade flow path. The vane segments are cast from a
colbalt base high temperature alloy with inner and outer shrouds integral with the
vanes. They are held in position in the blade ring by means of a pin. Small gaps
between the segments allow for differential expansion between a segment and blade
ring during temperature changes. A continuous cooling air flow through the hollow
vanes protects them from excessive temperature effects. Each stage blade ring
assembly forms an individual unit radially keyed to the turbine cylinder. This permits
easy access to any turbine row. In addition, by use of a patented roll-out system, an
entire blade ring assembly can be removed and reinstalled without disturbing the
spindle or the remaining turbine stages. Leakage past each stationary row :s reduced to
a minimum by a patented seal structure consisting of a seal support ring radially keyed
to the vane segments. The seal ring is maintained at an optimum operating temperature
by cooling air flow. This temperature is continuously monitored by thermocouples
located in the seals. The above cooling system design described permits a relative

Lesson 1 Code: SEC-S0A-!1111A radial thermal growth between

the vane segments and seal support ring, thus permitting the use of minimum radial
seal clearance. The gas turbine trunnion support forms part of the turbine cylinder
section. Its purpose is to provide a rigid vertical

SIEMENS AND WESTINGHOUSE GT AUX-SYSTEM
restraint while allowing free axial and flexible lateral growth of the gas turbine
cylinders. The flexible rod at the bottom of the turbine cylinder supplements the
trunnion support. It allows an axial and vertical growth of the cylinder while holding
the cylinder on the centerline.

Exhaust Cylinder Section

The exhaust cylinder fabrication is composed of the bearing housing, inner and outer
cones of the exhaust diffuser, and outer case, all joined together by means of a strut
system. The strut system, an exclusive Siemens and Westinghouse patented feature,
consists of six bearing struts equally spaced around the circumference, but disposed
tangentially with respect to the bearing housing. These struts run from the bearing
housing to the outer case. In the hot gas section of the exhaust diffuser, the bearing
struts are shielded inside another set of struts which are hollow and serve as supports
for the exhaust diffuser cones. Thus the bearing struts are protected from the hot
exhaust gas by envelopes of cooler air around them. This results in a strut system that
is less sensitive to transient temperatures. Growth of the outer case and struts is
accommodated by bearing housing rotation. The system provides a low stress rigid
support which is capable of holding the bearing on center for all variations of load and
temperature.

A sealing structure called "static seal" separates the tunnel around the bearing
housing from the turbine discs. Openings in the bearing housing wall provide
passages through which the tunnel air is aspirated into the cavities of the bearing
sealing system and to the plenum behind the static seal called disc cavity No. 5. In
the bearing sealing system, a part of the aspirated air flows through the air-to-oil seals
into the bearing chamber where a degree of vacuum exists. The remainder of the air
moves in the opposite direction and leaks through an air seal into the disc cavity No.
5. The disc cavity air is continuously sucked in by the exhaust flow in the exhaust
diffuser. This air aspiration arrangement ensures a continuous ventilation of the
bearing tunnel and thus maintains an acceptable environmental temperature. The
pressure levels in the bearing sealing system can be verified by utilizing the pressure
taps provided for this purpose.

Exhaust Manifold Section

The exhaust manifold section consists of the exhaust manifold, flow liner, expansion
joint and exhaust transition. The exhaust gas flows trough the exhaust manifold and
flow liner into the exhaust transition from where it is discharged into the silencer. Its
flow boundary remains circumferential until the gas enters the exhaust transition,
forming a rectangular cross-section corridor leading to the silencer. The manifold
itself serves as a sort of muffler in which the flow is slowed down without becoming
excessively turbulent. This flow stabilization further improves the gas turbine
performance and provided greater protection for the silencer baffles from material

ISCOSA TRAINING CENTER
SIEMENS AND WESTINGHOUSE GT AUX-SYSTEM
erosion. All the parts of the exhaust system section, with the exception of the
expansion joint, are fabricated from a high strength low alloy steel material.

The exhaust manifold is composed of one outer and inner cylinder held together by
means of two struts that are hollow inside. The outer cylinder has the shape of a
truncated cone. The inner cylinder, in conjunction with the inner cone of the exhaust
diffuser, forms an enclosed chamber around the gas turbine centerline. An access
passage to this chamber and a channel for the pipe and conduit lines going to the
bearing area are provided through the hollow struts. The manifold is connected to the
exhaust transition by means of an expansion joint made from a high temperature
resistant material. Its primary function is to accommodate the axial growth of the unit
due to thermal expansion, and to prevent any external load from being imposed upon
the exhaust manifold.

Spindle Assembly

The gas turbine rotor consists of compressor and turbine spindles bolted together to
form one spindle assembly. It is supported on two pressure-lubricated, pivoted-pad
journal bearings which are insensitive to thermal misalignment. The spindle mass is of
sufficient magnitude as to be minimally influenced by vibration or unbalance from
either the connecting span or driven machinery. The spindle operates above the second
critical speed and its response to unbalance at or near the second critical speed is of a
small magnitude. The compressor portion of the spindle consists of ring type
compressor discs shrunk onto a hollow forged spindle. This gives a favorable weight to
stiffness relationship with respect to the length of the shaft. The discs are finish
machined and broached before shrinking on the spindle. The 12% chromium material
of the compressor blades provides material damping for all modes, while the "dove
tail" roots are designed to provide root damping with regard to the fundamental
tangential modes.

The turbine portion of the spindle is made up of the torque tube and four turbine discs.

The torque tube section is a hollow cylinder which performs many functions. It
provides a torque carrying connection between the compressor and turbine, conducts
spindle cooling air to the turbine discs, and acts as a nesting place for the turbine bolt
extensions. This last feature allows for greater spindle bolt length so that variation of
bolt load under transient temperature conditions is greatly reduced and the material
elastic limit is not exceeded.

The turbine discs are made from alloy steel forgings. They are connected to each

curvic coupling is a toothed connection member with characteristic curve-shaped
teeth spaced circumferentially around its face. In one member the teeth are hour-
glass shaped, while teeth of the mating member are barrel shaped. When the parts
are engaged, the teeth form a simple yet highly accurate disc to disc connection with
sufficient elasticity to follow the stage to stage temperature changes. The turbine

E. Gear Type Couplings Forced Feed

The forced-feed type coupling is used principally on large geared units. For this
application the same oil is used for lubricating the coupling as for the turbine and gear.
The lube oil is pumped to the coupling, flows through it and then drains into the
coupling housing where it is returned to the oil reservoir.

F. Gear Type Flexible Couplings - Packed

Westinghouse material specification 53701UZ, or equivalent, is recommended for the

flexible coupling lubrication requirements under normal operation, unless a special
lubricant is specified on the component nameplate, of by the component
manufacturer's lube instructions. This specification is designated for the convenience
of the user of the flexible coupling and their lubricant suppliers; it does not constitute
endorsement, nor does Westinghouse assume any responsibility for the quality
performance or availability of any of the lubricant suppliers products.
The following lubricants equivalent to Siemens and Westinghouse Specification
53701UZ, are recommended for use in the subject coupling:

a. Mobilux 2
b. Sinclair Synchrolube 3
c. Sunaplex 882 EPM
d. Marfak3
e. Alvania EP 2
f. Amolith 2
g. Dura-Lith EP 2

G. Inlet Guide Vanes

The shanks of the variable inlet guide vanes are lubricated through a hydraulic fitting
at each vane. Lubrication required at overhaul or as often as necessary will be with oil
meeting requirements of Siemens and Westinghouse Specification PDS 55125AF.

'111F LUBRICATION FITTINGS.

Gear Type Flexible Coupling Lubrication Procedure

To ensure proper operation and maximum life of the flexible coupling, lubricate the
coupling at one year intervals unless a leakage of lubricant is detected before then.
Possible leakage points would be at the joint of the sleeves or at the "0" ring seals
between the sleeve and the hub.

Use of excessive amounts of lubricant will not impair operation of the coupling, but it
is recommended that the correct amount be used. The practice of placing excessive
lubrication in the coupling on the basis that the excess will run out and thus leave
sufficient lubricant is not approved, because you then do not know whether the
lubricant which is thrown out is in excess or leakage. The proper amount of lubricant
should be placed in the coupling and none should be thrown out or permitted to leak
out. You then are assured you have the proper amount of lubricant in the coupling. It is
permissible for several drops of lubricant to be thrown out, but if more is observed you
should check the coupling carefully for leakage.

It is recommended that the coupling should, on an annual basis be disassembled by

removing the coupling bolts and parting the sleeves, remove the seals and wash the
coupling with PDS558I2CB to thoroughly remove the contaminated lubricant. It is
recommended that new seals be replaced at this time. This would minimize the chance
of future leakage from aging or other deleterious effects from the lubricant or solvent
upon the seals.

CAUTION
IF SEAL ARE NOT REMOVED, CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO KEEP THE SOLVENT FROM
CONTACTING THE SEALS. THE SOLVENT MAY BE DETRIMENTAL TO THE SEALS.

Refer to the leaflet concerning Lubrication Requirements under this tab for
recommended lubricants.

To regrease the motor, turn off the power, remove the outlet plug, and add grease with
a hand lever gun only. Stop lubrication at once if the grease appears at the outlet plug.
Run the motor for about ten minutes before replacing the outlet plug. Certain TEFC
motors have a spring relief outlet fitting on the fan end; if the cutlet plug is not
accessible at surface of hood, it is the spring relief type and need not be removed
when regreasing.

CAUTION
OVERGREASING IS A MAJOR CAUSE OF BEARING AND MOTOR FAILURE. MAKE SURE
DIRT AND AND CONTAMINA rs ARE NOT INTRODUCED WHEN ADDING GREASE.

See specifications Section for Lubrication Requirements.

the lens dry after using a wet cleaner.

Clean Contact Points

A. TURN OFF THE POWER. In the control room, open the box and clean the
contacts.

Cleaning Contacts

Although contact action in the Model 424 relay provides a practical amount of self-
cleaning, atmospheric contaminants (dust. vaporized grease or varnish, corrosive
gases, etc.) can inhibit a contact's ability to make a good electrical circuit. This is
evidenced either by non-operation or erratic operation of the affected circuit. To clean
contacts, draw a strip of crocus cloth or a commercially available contact burnisher
between the contact surfaces: W:th normally open contacts, close them manually
against the cleaning implement. Do not use a file, sandpaper or emery cloth. The
object is to remove contaminants, not contact material.
