Period 3
6.1 Changes in States of Matter
1. Temperature-a measure of the kinetic energy of all the particles in an object
2. Thermal Energy-the sum of the kinetic energy and potential energy of the
particles in a material
3. Melting Point-is the temperature at which the material changes from a solid
to a liquid
4. Freezing Point-temperature at which the liquid changes to a solid
5. Vaporization-the change from a liquid to a gas
6. Boiling-vaporization that occurs within a liquid
7. Boiling Point-the temperature at which boiling occurs in a liquid
8. Evaporation-vaporization that occurs at the surface of the liquid
9. Condensation-the change from a gas to a liquid
10. Sublimation-the change of a solid to a gas without going through the liquid
state
11. Deposition-the change of a gas to a solid without going through a liquid state
12. Potential Energy-the energy an object has due to its position
13. Temperature, -change in state is due to the motion and the strength of the
Thermal energy, particles
and heat
14. Moving Particles -it increases as the objects speed increases
And Kinetic -particles in random motion
Energy
15.Temperature and –temp. is the measure of avg. kinetic energy
Average Kinetic - as temp. increases particles move faster
Energy
15. Measuring - use a liquid thermometer
Temperature -Farenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin
16. Particles of -result of their forces
Matter and -increases the further they get apart
Potential Energy
17. Thermal Energy -includes kinetic and potential energy
-gas has more than a solid and liquid
18. What can cause the potential energy of particles in matter to increase?
If a the substance is undergoing a change of state to a gas or liquid
it’s potential energy will increase.
19. Adding and -flows when material is heated
removing thermal-flows out when cooled
energy
20. How is thermal energy added to a material?
Thermal energy is added when a material is added when you heat up the
material
21. Thermal Energy -adding thermal can coase kinetic &potential to increase
and Changes in State –thermal must flow in or out to change
22. Changes
Between the
Solid and
Liquid States
