Ex. No: SPEED CONTROL OF DC SHUNT MOTOR

Date:

AIM
To control the speed of the given DC Shunt motor and draw its characteristics by the
field control method.

S. NO. APPARATUS RANGE TYPE QUANTITY
1. Voltmeter (0-300)V MC 1
2. Ammeter (0 - 2) A MC 1
350 Ω / 1.4 A
3 Rheostat Each 1
55 Ω / 4.6 A
4 Tachometer 1

THEORY
FIELD CONTROL METHOD

 In this method the speed control of dc shunt motor is done by varying the flux per pole,
hence the name is field or flux control method

 We know that back emf is Eb   = (ΦPNZ) / (60A)

Eb    ∝  Փ N

 Speed is inversely proportional to flux. So by varying flux we can change

the speed of the motor.
N ∝ Eb/Φ (or) N ∝ V –  Ia  Ra /Φ
 Where V =  Eb   +  Ia  Ra    neglecting brush drop
so Eb   = V –  Ia  Ra

 In this method a variable resistance (known as shunt field rheostat) is placed in

series with shunt field winding

 The field rheostat reduces the shunt field current If. So the flux also gets reduced.

 Adding more resistance in series with the field winding will increase the speed as it
decreases the flux.

MODEL GRAPH
This method is used when the speed above the no load (rated) speed are required. The
speed of motor N α 1/Φ, by decreasing the flux the speed can be increased vice versa the flux
could be changed by changing Ish with the help of a field rheostat has to carry only a small
current which means I2R losses is small so that rheostat is small in size. This method is
therefore efficient in non-Interpol or machine the speed could increase in the ratio 2:1. Any
further weakening of flux effect the commutation and hence put a limit to the maximum
speed obtained with this method.

PRECAUTIONS
Field Rheostat should be kept in the minimum resistance position and Armature
Rheostat should be kept in the maximum resistance position at the time of starting and
stopping the motor.

PROCEDURE
Connections are given as per the circuit diagram.
1. Verify whether the armature rheostat of the motor is kept at maximum position and the
field rheostat is kept at minimum position.
2. By closing the DPST Switch, 230V DC Supply is given.
3. Start the motor by using 3 point starter.
4. For field control method keep the armature voltage as constant by adjusting the
armature rheostat to a fixed value.
5. Vary the rheostat connected in the field circuit and for each setting note the
corresponding field current and speed and tabulate it.

RESULT
The speed control of DC Shunt motor is conducted and the curves are drawn.
