BUNG TOMO, THE NATION’S WARRIOR

Bung Tomo is an Indonesian national hero who is known for his struggle in the battle
of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. His real name is Sutomo. Bung Tomo was born in
Kampung Baluran (Baluran village) Surabaya on October 3, 1920. He is the eldest of six
childern in his family.

When he was young, Bung Tomo spent most of his time as a journalist for the daily
Soeara Oemoem, Jawa Ekspres, Pembela Rakyat, and Poestaka Timoer magazine. In 1944, Bung
Tomo was elected as a member of Gerakan Rakyat Baru (New People’s Movement) sponsored
by Japan. After that he voiced his oration which ignited the spirit of the people to fight for
Indonesia’s independence. Since October 12, 1945, Bung Tomo has led the Barisan
Pemberontak Rakyat Indonesia (Indonesian people’s rebels) or BPRI in Surabaya. Altough in
the end Indonesia lost the battle, the people of Surabaya were considered successful in
withdrawing the attack from the British troops for a while.

Bung Tomo died on october 7, 1981 in Padang Arafah. For his service to Indonesia,
he was given the title as a national hero right on the commemoration of Heroes Day in 2008.
We will always remember his services because of his struggles that were not in vain until
now Indonesia is independent.
