GOWNING AND GLOVING (CLOSED METHOD)

PROCEDURE
1. Gather materials needed for the procedure.
 Sterile gown
 Sterile gloves
2. Perform handwashing before proceeding to the clean, dry surface area where the sterile gown and gloves
are located above your waist.
3. Pick up the sterile gown at the crease near the neck and allow it to unfold in front of you without letting it
touch any area that is considered soiled.
4. Insert your hands into the shoulders of the gown and let your arms slide into the sleeves without touching
the outside part of the gown. Make sure that the hands reach the proximal end of the cuffs.
5. Let a circulating nurse pull and tie the gown upward to cover the neckline of the uniform
6. Open the inner wrapper of the sterile gloves with the hands still covered with the sleeves of the gown.
7. With the dominant hand, pick up the non- dominant glove with the thumb and the index finger through
the sleeves of the gown.
8. Hold the glove by the folded edges of the cuff with the thumb and first finger. Position the non-
dominant hand under the sleeves to receive the glove.
9. Touching only the cuff, pull glove onto the hand. Keep hands in front of you and away from the uniform
so that nothing touches the glove.
10. With the dominant hand under the sleeves, grasp the upper side of the glove’s cuff to stretch it over the
cuff of the gown.
11. The sleeves should be pulled up to draw the glove’s cuff over the wrist as the fingers are extended into
the glove’s fingers.
12. Pick up the second glove by slipping the fingers of the gloved hand under the cuff.
13. Still holding gloved fingers under the cuff, pull the other glove onto the other hand. Extend the fingers
into the gloves as you pull the glove over the cuff of the gown.
14. Finish wearing the sterile gown. Let a circulating nurse tie the waist of the gown by making a three-
quarter turn to take the tie. Tie both ends of the belt.
15. Sterile gowns are considered sterile only from the waist to the shoulder and from the cuff of the sleeves
to 2 inches above the elbow.
