Goderj
Your Company as part of the Godrej group aims to build a brighter,
more sustainable India.
During the year your Company undertook various activities as a part
of its Corporate Social Responsibility. Your Company instituted the
Indian chapter of ‘Table For Two’ initiative at the World Economic
Forum’s India Summit in December last year. This initiative was
targeted at addressing hunger and malnutrition in the developing
world by combining our organization’s tradition of serving society
and your individual involvement.
Your Company continues to support Heroes AIDS Project (HAP).
HAP is a national HIV/AIDS initiative launched in July 2004 to
work with media organizations and societal leaders in India. It
seeks to develop coordinated campaigns to address the spread
of HIV/AIDS and reduce stigma and discrimination by infl uencing
public perception and policy through two platforms, advocacy
and communications.
Under the Teach for India initiative, your Company has sponsored
one Company employee for a period of 2 years under Teach for
India Fellowship program which is run by Teach for India, an
organization established in 2008 to bridge the educational divide
and increase the participation of highly skilled leaders in the
education sector of India. Under this program, the sponsored
employee is committed to teach for two years in low-income urban
and rural public schools. During the year, your Company donated
fl y catcher machines through Lions Club to various hospitals,
orphanages, old age homes, home for blind, BMC run schools etc.
Your Company distributed scholarships to Scheduled Caste (SC)
/ Scheduled Tribes (ST) primary school children covering three
schools and also distributed note books to SC/ST primary school
children in village Kanerao.
ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL CONCERN
Your Company continues its efforts for the betterment of the
environment and conservation of scarce natural resources.
Your Company planted 4,500 trees in the Company’s premises
at Valia and environmental training sessions were conducted
by Company’s personnel at ITI Valia and Anchor Institute, DDIT,
Ahmedabad and Ankleshwar.
Your Company continued “Rain water harvesting” initiatives
undertaken at its factory and in the staff quarters at Vikhroli. So
far 18,500 m3 of water has been collected at Vikhroli factory and
staff quarters for the Year 2009-10. This process has resulted in
saving water and consequently, the costs, thereof.
To prevent pollution to environment, efforts are made to convert
waste from the factories into an environment friendly product
and then dispose off the same safely. Your Company continued
its arrangement with Trans Thane Creek Waste Management
Association for the treatment of solid waste being generated at
the Company’s factory at Vikhroli. More areas of wasteland have
been converted into garden using water from ETP.
As part of your Company’s continued commitment to conserve
natural resources, and also to ward off the ever increasing water
shortage, the Company has successfully commissioned a Reverse
Osmosis plant to upgrade ETP treated water to boiler feed water
resulting into effective recycling of ETP treated water.
Vikhroli factory continues to convert the bio degradable waste into
bio compost with the help of an NGO. The Vikhroli factory focused
on waste elimination and also continued energy conservation
measures.
The Valia factory has improved / modifi ed in Generation / Transfer/
Treatment / Monitoring and disposal pattern of waste water and
treated water. Achieved signifi cant reduction of main waste water
pollutant parameter i.e. COD Value at inlet of ETP compared to
last year and streamlined/optimized the operation and treatment
capability of ETP.

Grasim
Grasim
The challenges that the world faces on environment
conservation, are indeed alarming. Just to highlight
a few – climate change, the severity of droughts and
floods, their impact on rain fed agriculture, the
emission of greenhouse gases and our ability to
pursue sustainable development. We in India are no
exception to these issues. Environment conservation
and sustainable development are continuously on
your Company’s radar. Hence these are integrated
into its business strategies as well as its efforts towards
fostering inclusive growth through its rural
development and community initiatives.
All of your Company’s plants in the Cement, Viscose
Staple Fibre, Pulp and Textile businesses are ISO-
14001 EMS certified. Most of the Plants are also
OHSAS-18001 and SA-8000 certified. The OEKO
TEX-100 certification by BTTG, UK testifies that all
products manufactured under the Birla Cellulosic
brand confirm to the highest ecological parameters
established for products that touch the skin. This
certification also endorses the fact that Birla Cellulosic
is devoid of any harmful substance.
Towards green house gas reduction, your Company’s
plant at Kharach has taken on three Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM) projects. These have
been approved by the Ministry of Environment and
Forest (MoEF) and their validation is underway.
Your Company’s Cement business has already earned
carbon credits.
At your Company’s Pulp Plant, waste is reclaimed
as biogas. This is used in the lime kiln and hot air
generators, substituting furnish oil and light diesel
oil to a large extent. Besides lowering the fuel
consumption this initiative has resulted in cutting down
the emission of greenhouse gas.
At VSF Plants, treated effluent is used for irrigation
and better crop yields. For the year under review
over 3,790 Bighas of farm land has been irrigated.
At your Company’s plant in Kharach, we have taken
major initiatives to bring the fresh water consumption
down by 3 million liters every day. We have
successfully reduced water usage by 1 million liters
a day. We are optimistic that by FY-2011, we should
be able to attain this target.
Your Directors are pleased to inform you that at your
Company’s Plant in Kharach we initiated the
development of mangroves in 10 hectare area at
the creek of the river Kim (Kharach near Baroda).
Your Company has enlisted the support of a Surat
based NGO named Kantha Vistar Satatyapurna
Sangh.
On energy conservation measures at your Company’s
Malanpur Plant, we are pleased to share with you
that we have managed to save over 950 units of
power consumption per day through the reuse of
vacuum pump circulating water and the installation
of LED power saving lighting, coupled with
optimization in the moisture control plant
(humidification plant) and the chiller operation.
Your Company is a voluntary member of the Cement
Sustainability Initiative (CSI). The CSI sets common
measures and is a knowledge networking forum on
environmental impact issues. Your Company’s
sustainable development program is in sync with the
parameters of the CSI.
Your Company’s Cement plants continue to validate
its energy efficiency, kiln reliability and productivity
based on data from Global Benchmarking Surveys,
conducted annually by Whitehopleman – an
independent UK based consulting firm.
Your Company’s thrust on use of alternate fuels is
gaining momentum. We have been continuing our
efforts to reduce consumption of fossil fuels by
substituting these with wastes from other industries.
It is difficult for the waste generating industries to
safely dispose these wastes generated and the only
other choice is through incineration.
We have saved using coal by recoursing to alternate
fuels such as processed municipal solid waste, agro
waste, tyre chips and used polythene and plastics. In
2009-10, we substituted the use of natural resources
with 32,000 tons of waste materials as fuel,
equivalent to 16,000 tons of coal burning, thereby
reducing the impact of environmental damage. We
are building competency and installing machinery at
our plants to handle waste fuels in the most ecofriendly
manner.
Your Company has developed and implemented
measures to monitor and reduce green house gas
(GHG) emissions from its manufacturing operations.
The GHG emission details and mitigation plan are
being audited by KPMG as Independent Third Party
Auditors. This is work-in-progress. We expect to
publish their findings in the 3
rd
quarter of
47
FY 2010-11. Whatever course correction or
innovative suggestions emanate from the report, will
be implemented. Their findings will be published by
mid 2010-11.
Rain water harvesting continues to be a priority area.
Water bodies in the catchment areas for rainwater
storage and ground water recharging have been set
up. At the same time in shopping complexes, hospital
roofs, school and mine offices at our plant locations,
rain water harvesting system has been instituted. This
effectively recharges rain water in the bore wells and
helps maintain ground water levels.
The greenbelt at our plants is simply awesome.
Collectively, over 20 lakhs trees, line our plants.
At Nagda, the greenbelt covers more than 76% of
the industrial complex, at your Company’s plant at
Kharach, ayurvedic gardens and floriculture
beautifully dots the horizon. At some points, you
cannot even see the skyline. Only the leaves and the
flowers and hear the cacophony of the birds. When
you walk through this wooded ambience, you can
never imagine that there would be a plant in the
midst of nature. Our Board, our Management and
all of our colleagues are committed to living in
harmony with nature.

n February 2010, we launched the brand-new CR-Z
hybrid vehicle. The CR-Z is equipped with a three-mode
drive system that enables motorists to select the driving
mode that best suits various driving conditions and driving
styles and to pursue both the joys of driving and ecofriendly
performance. An automobile should be a source
of pleasure, and we think automobiles need to have a
unique personality that makes people want to drive them.
As an automobile that helps motorists pursue the joy of
driving, we believe the CR-Z expands the possibilities of
the hybrid vehicle concept and will contribute to the wider
ownership of hybrid vehicles. Later this year, we plan to
launch a hybrid-model Fit, and we are working to further
strengthen our lineup by focusing on the development of
medium and large-sized hybrid automobiles.

polythene and plastics. In 2009-10, we
substituted the use of natural resources with
20,000 tons of waste materials as fuel,
equivalent to 10,000 tons of coal burning every
day. This has helped our environmental
conservation efforts significantly. We are building
competency and installing machinery at our Units
to handle waste fuels in the most eco-friendly
manner.
Your Company’s Units at Kovaya and Jafrabad
in Gujarat are among the largest users of
shipping in the cement industry. The sea route is
the most cost effective and environmentally
friendly transport for delivering cement and
clinker in the coastal and export markets. These
Units also receive incoming raw material and
fuel sources such as gypsum, iron ore, coal and
petcoke at its captive berth. In this way green
house gas emission in the environment is
contained.
Surface miners have been deployed, facilitating
production of limestone from the mines up to
40% in a dust free manner.
Your Company’s Unit at Kovaya is the only
Unit in this sector in India to have a
desalination plant. It is used for meeting the
water needs of the plant and the colony. The
waste gases from the cooler are used in the
desalination plant.
At all your Company’s Units, the treated water
from the sewage treated plant is used for
horticulture and process requirements as well.
Rain water harvesting is a priority area. Water
bodies in the catchment areas for rainwater
storage and ground water recharging have been
set up. At the same time in shopping complexes,
hospital roofs, school and mine offices at our
Unit locations, rain water harvesting system has
been instituted. These effectively recharges rain
water in the bore wells and helps maintain
ground water levels.
While we had planned the development of
greenbelt cover of 11 hectares, we were able to
spread it to 15 hectares, which gives us a lot of
satisfaction. We have also initiated a Jetropha
project at our mines.
The greenbelt at our Units is simply awesome
and is surrounded by trees all around. At some
points, you cannot even see the skyline. Only
the leaves and the flowers and hear the
cacophony of the birds. When you walk through
this wooded ambience, you can never imagine
that there would be a plant in the midst of
nature. Our Board, our Management and all of
our colleagues are committed to living in
harmony with nature.
